Remember before Light held Ray up, he was talking to Ryuk about his results of testing the Death Note and it's capabilities. Ryuk was surprised as even he didn't know that you can write down the details then fill in the name later. So it's seems Ryuk truely doesn't have a good understanding of the Death Note.

Ryuk only knows the basic set of rules for the Death Note - though you'd think that after translating a lot of it into English before coming to the earth realm that he'd take the time to understand most of the rules a lot more. Ah well, thats just a side of Ryuk we all know. :3
