Paladin is the title given to the absolute strongest of the arch-dragnars, the way I remember it. So while it is technically only a title, it's a title given to someone who stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Before you ask, Ash doesn't count since he's the Knight of Avalon. Unlike the paladin, that title does imply an inherent power, and said power is literally beyond human potential. Think of it like this: Paladin = Batman, Knight of Avalon = Superman. Train enough with the right mindset, anyone could be Batman. But you have to be born Superman.
