If that's true then Tragedies wouldn't exist as a genre... Nor would war stories.
Plot development serves to tell a story and provide entertainment, as well as to allow the creators to give their views on relevant subjects. Deaths are part of telling a story if the subject is relevant. Its certainly not "pointless".
