I am not a yaoi watcher, so I can't comment there, but a
lot of yuri series tend to be set at schools w/dorms thus parents aren't focused on by default.
But I presume most series that choose not to involve them do so because otherwise it pretty much forces them into intolerant parent drama for one or more of the characters if it is trying to be realistic and not every series
wants to deal with that.
Though plenty of animes in general choose to set aside parents to being next to non-existent status (Bakemonogatari, K-On!, Amagami SS, Hyouka for example all barely have parent presences)
