An Australian woman had her children of 5 and 2 with her and couldn't hold them both. She had to leave one because the three of them would drown, so she left her 5 year old child because he had some chances of surviving by himself unlike the 2 year old one. Indeed, the older boy managed to reach the coast unharmed so now the three of them are okay.
The problem is that she did let go one of her children, she chosed one over the other and that boy might reproach her about it, like Johan does.
Thinking about it I wonder if Johan's mother didn't felt something like that. I believe Nina's stronger than him and she's maneged to survive all that and she grew up to be a great woman while Johan, who didn't went to the Red Rose Mansion, is not that strong. He's far more inmature and allow people and things to affect him more than they sould without getting help.
I think their mother believed that if Johan went with Bonaparta it would be the end of him while Nina had bigger chances of surviving, which she did.
/agreed........
