Actually, it just hit me...
In the summary's so far, Blackbeard says he joined whitebeard in order to find the darkness devil fruit and that the reason he killed Sachi, whitebeard's 4th division leader, is because he was the one who took the darkness devil fruit... but what this means is that blackbeard only got his power recently, and that he didn't have it before joining whitebeard and thus didn't even have it when he fought Shanks
not 100% sure on the translation... but everything else its said has been somewhat right...
