I could see that, in the very first scene of the series it did show them talking and it sounded like he didn't want an arranged marriage between them which I took to mean he didn't love her in that way and wanted both of them to marry for love, but your interpretation would fit the bill as well.
@Shiroth: It would be pretty early for an infodump but with all the foreshadowing I can' help but want it now.
