Well, not that this is an excuse, but this episode was based on an original story written by the author of the novels, Nagaru Tanigawa. Since the novels are narrated from Kyon's point of view, I think the author used this episode to portray a Haruhi story without Kyon.
Besides that, you can get glimpse at some interesting bits about Yuki (telling Tsuruya where Haruhi was, but not to Kyon; the cardigan) and the most obvious proof of affection coming from Haruhi towards Kyon (trying to put her cardigan on him). Also, couples walking down the same umbrella is a very romantic image in japanese culture.
Other than that, well, I think the author just wanted to free himself from the "Kyon must be there to tell the story" style, at least during this episode.
