I suspect this is a target audience thing... just because the plot has appeal for people other than lonely guys doesn't mean that lonely guys aren't a significant part of the target market.
It's also possible that some developers met early success by marketting their visual novels to adult game fans. Developers with a background in console games - where manufacturers don't allow explicit sexual content - actually do tend to release their visual novels without sexual content, in contrast to their counterparts with a background in PC games.
