I did find it sort of bizarre that Templars weren't all that great against mages, but I did find them pretty useful as a class. Dispel was actually pretty useful against some of the nastier debuffs mages would do (like curse of mortality, curse of missing, etc), and a long range AoE stun is always appreciated, although the mana burn aspect of that was pretty much unnoticeable. I think the most silly thing is Mental Fortress. I suppose that's supposed to represent magic resistance, but frankly most spells don't particularly care about mental resistance anyway. Heck, they're just as likely if not moreso to use physical resistance. That ability should've been some kind of generic spell resistance, either activated or passive. The fact that Templar is no better than anyone at surviving a magical onslaught of ice and fire is just sad. Furthermore, their passive mana burn attack could've been much stronger. Honestly, I could even notice it.
