I would throw in my two cents; one could have a career that necessitates performing evil acts, but not be evil to those of his peers and family.
ED is no less a villain than any other. What is different is we see that he is sociable and caring to those he is closed to. And that his body mutilation has harmed his life and made those who love him very sad.
Very rarely are career villains evil both on and off the clock. It is more often than not that even murderous psychopaths are okay people when they know you personally.
