Spoiler for Comparison to Mashiro-iro Symphony:
No matter what you think about the transition that occurred in Mashiro-iro Symphony, the show spent plenty of time gradually performing the shift, building the case for Shingo's feelings, showing lots of hints, and then spending time on the resolution of all the other heroines. The romance was the central element of the plot, and it took center stage through that entire part of the story. So even if it wasn't the romance you were hoping for, at least the show went to great efforts to justify how it happened (even if the scene the transition hinged on was extremely vague/cryptic except upon reflection).
Here, the romance has generally taken backstage to all the dramatic plot, and it's brought up as an issue now as a way to introduce the final dramatic element. The foundation for a Chisato romance had been in place since the start of the very first episode, and was reinforced particularly in episode 2. So the issue here isn't really that the protagonist fell in love with an unexpected heroine, but just the way the relationship developed over the course of the show (or more specifically, I guess, Yuuki's "sudden" realization).

PS: the debate became a montage... (
