I was basically nodding my head for the most part of your post, until I got to the part above, and then started LOL.
So in the west where the fans look up to the protagonists and think "Man, I want to be like that. That's bad-ass cool." After which they feel good for idolizing these men.
Some eastern fans see these dense and low-self-esteemed protagonists and think "Man, I'm not alone in the world. I can continue feeling low but the girls will still like me, I'll still win in the end, simply because I'm Ikari Shinji, err ... Keitaro... err.. I mean, simply because I'm the protagonist of the story." After which they feel good for identifying with such heroes.
