I haven't seen any signs of real stupidity from him. Yes, he's dense but not stupid.
That quote you've posted doesn't mean he's stupid. It can just mean that he believes what he sees. Seriously, this reminds me of how people kept thinking Shirou was stupid because they misquoted his "People die when they are killed" phrase...
