Not sure regarding chances for the latter at the moment, however there are considerable differences between the two and their plots diverge after the events of Volume 3 and Sailing 18 (not surprising considering that there were only 3 volumes out when work on the anime project first began and the other 3 volumes that were released before the anime aired (bearing in mind it was delayed from its planned airdate) were all one long arc).
