...which actually puts forth another aspect: Baking takes time. As you said, it's a luxury during wartime. You would need a working oven and time to prepare and cook. More often than not you'll find that foods served in the field or at bases will be relatively quick and easy to prepare
(case in point: Nikujaga). This is
probably also why the popular notion of military mess hall food is that it's a disgusting grey slop...
