It just felt like SEED Destiny lacked a lot of originality too, specially mid-way through to the end, where it melted down into SEED 2.0 pretty much.

Indeed. Destiny would have been better had Rey not been a Rau clone and they removed all that Spatial Awareness stuff by doing as they originally planned. Such as killing Rau, Mu, and Kira by SEED's end. Would have made for a better story, a world without the CE version of Newtypes as they struggle to solve their own issues without such special powers holding their hands.
Furthermore the time spent on Kira would have been better spent on Shinn, Lunamaria, Athrun, Cagalli, Rey, Talia, and Durandal.
