Even only managing to make it to light speed (or even almost to light speed) would be very useful for our species.
While light speed still means years to even the closest star systems, it means that if it can be used safely in the Solar System, the other planets are just minutes to maybe an hour away. Commerce happens when you can get to Mars and back within an hour.
The proposed 10 times light speed would make traveling to other stars viable as the closest star with seemingly viable life sustaining planets would be just a little over two years travel away.
