Do not think its insecurity at all, it more like possessiveness. It was like her saying that this is mine, any other woman is not allowed to flirt, including mother, with him. Her mother knew what was going on and was teasing her a bit.
For those who have not gone through it, a newly engaged girl is scary. I walked around for about a year looking at the ground to make sure I saw nothing from her perspective; I was never one to looking around anyway.
