About the Vergo and Smoker fight, I looked over the chapter again and I believe that Smoker's purpose might have been to recover Law's heart because:
- Smoker needs Law's help in order to recover his own heart (Smoker's heart that is)
- Also when a story progresses, it seems harder to drop the guard (defense) of a strong opponent (although Vergo is definitely not the most powerful character) so in a sense Smoker had to take a hit from Vergo in order to recover Law's heart. Actually if you look back at the last pages of chapter 690, Vergo was surprised when Smoker snatched Law's heart without his awareness.
- Thirdly, it seems as I stated before that plotwise, Law had a score to settle with Vergo due to their past. In other words, it was Law's turn to shine
- Fourthly, as a person who keeps his promises and hates being in debt to pirates, return the favor to Law
