Apparently the "Disappearance" world has been cast loose from spacetime, and is stuck as a fragment without a past or a future. In order to save this other world, Kyon must jump back and forth through a 48-hour period with the aid of "Dimensional Bookmarks", which are basically "save points" that he can set up to take him back to particular moments without the risk of meeting his past self. (to use the "movie frames" analogy of time according to Mikuru, he would be rewinding time rather than jumping like the TPDD does)

Interesting...I wonder if it would add in an epilogue for Disappearance? Since they left out a, what I consider, pretty important part that explains who saved Kyon at the end.
