according to Kawamori kantoku (there s a 6 pages long interview part in the manga), he wants to show the "school live" and "artist world" part more, as in TV serie these parts were not shown as much as he would like (he said macross f consists of 3 parts, school live/学園, entertainment world/芸能界, and battle/戦闘). So he want to show it, shoujo manga he thinks is the right media for this.
He thinks fans can view the manga as another macross f. like in movie is different with the tv serie, the manga version also have its way of description of some plot or events, so different things between the manga and tv version is unavoidable.

I'm currently reading it right now...I'm a bit over halfway through Chapter 0.
