How do sports story authors make the opposing teams interesting? I already have most members of my hero team built out, but I don't have any references or bases for the opposing teams aside from the old and new NBA teams.

I liked how SD and PoT fleshed out their respective non-opposing teams.

Spoiler for SD: Not really as much as I wanted, but I guess Inoue-sensei fleshed out the opposing teams well, particularly Shoyo, Kainan (the best prefectural team in the setting), Ryonan, and Sannoh (the best Nationals team in the setting) Spoiler for PoT: Seigaku actually made an alliance with Rokkaku and a fierce rivalry with Hyotei, plus Rikkaidai, the best team in the story, was fleshed out so well, especially in the OVA-only Nationals Arc. So yeah, underdog themes are really prevalent in sports shows, huh?
