It also sounds like Sakura was on a mission with him for a while. We don't know everything they did over those 12 years. There was probably more contact than zero.

Then what was the point in the whole "child of the prophecy" thing or whatever they called Naruto in the first place ,I mean wasn't Naruto the one who would bring great peace on earth.
If Sasuke had so much military missions that he can't even contact his family for 10-12 years then Naruto failed as the saviour of the world.
And just to mention 1 more thing. Even military guys soften up when they have kids especially if the kid is a girl(then the effect is doubled
) but of cours there are always exceptions.
