Regarding Nana Mizuki's involvement:
I was wary, at first. Anything that wasn't more traditional seemed to just jar with Yamato. [Fight for Freedom] was an example of what not to do...
But its a Nana song, and I usually liked them. So when I downloaded the album, I got a double bonus: the craziness of SYMPHOGEEEEAAAAR and the nostalgia of Yamato.
[Ai no Hoshi] was orchestraic, epic, and while the instruments and singing style has been updated by 30 years, I could feel that Nana was both in her element and yet did not override what Yamato was: a old movie about an iconic ship from a bygone era. If only there was more Enka in it; I'm sure Nana would've loved it even more.
(Or heck, give us an Enka track already!!)
Long story short, it came out better than I expected and I hope to hell its not because I'm a Nana fanboy...
