I'm definitely seconding Haladflire65 on
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. One of the recent most entertaining, yet thrilling action/comedy shows out there. Crisp animation, good action, funny comedy and gripping story.
Also, if graphics are a big factor for you, I'm definitely recommending the
Kara no Kyoukai movies to you. It's a series of 7 movies (with a total duration of 7h50, basically the same as a 26ep series) with the most gorgeous animation, the best action/mystery from 2009.
