So saw it today with a good friend during the limited run.
Spoiler for Shin Godzilla:
As has already been pointed out, this movie had lots of talking political heads, and I basically call it Godzilla done Evangelion-style. Basically, Godzilla was an ANGEL but we have no Eva units (though considering what Unit 01 is... um... well, Anno is behind both...). I would say this movie is about how japan responds to a "natural" disaster. All the bureaucracy... and assuming much of what happened in the offices is real Japan... well, is Japan really THAT bureaucratic? Hell, even seeing the workers stay in the office... I've heard about it, but I didn't realize just how extreme Japan is with it. Granted, this was to take care of a threat to the entire nation...
On the Godzilla himself side. Just DAMN. or at least, when he gets to what we all know as Godzilla. I kinda like the evolutionary touch that Anno did, though as I joked, "what is he now, a pokemon?". And then when he unleashes ALL the terror and destruction.... Yeah, my jaw hit the floor. First, the insane firebombing effect... and then the BACK LASERS!!! HOLY FUCK! That scene at night looked like Godzilla was coming straight out of Hell. Granted, seeing the back (and tail!) lasers during the day seemed more like a cheap Sentai effect. Tha black and white, light and dark contrast used in the original move and then at night in this movie are what truly make for a terrifying Godzilla scene.
Overall, I give the movie a solid 8.5/10. My biggest complaint, really, is just how much NGE-style stuff Anno put into the movie.
