Spoiler for Madoka Magica 03 - Skyblue gradation:
Keep in mind that "dark" does not automatically equal "good", viewer, though I will admit that this was foreshadowed, and the tone of the show has been building up to something like this since day one. But I come here not to praise it for being dark, but for storytelling. "Dark" is a buzzword that I am not fond of, but that is not what this discussion is about.
Seeing the many different magical girls on the air now calls to mind just how different things are. There's lighthearted and threatening (Pretty Cure), dark but nonthreatening (Zombie desu ka?), lighthearted and nonthreatening (Lilpri) and occupying the last part of the quadrangle is this one. That was...not an ending I could have seen. There was no blood, but that proves you don't need blood to create horror. The human imagination is powerful enough.
Yet, I remain optimistic. This is because I am an idiot, but also because with all these conflicting ideals on the production staff, ultimately, things might turn out okay. I thought the same for So Ra no Wo To, and both lost and won, should conditions of victory be factored in at all. But whatever the future holds, I shall continue to watch affixed.
That was really more of an essay, wasn't it?
