The preview cover image on retailer Amazon.com for the January 2015 issue of Kadokawa's Comic Gene magazine is listing that a television anime adapting Last Note's Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku (Mikagura School Suite) series of light novels has been green-lit.

Synopsis/Premise:

The story of the original light novels and manga revolves around high school girl Eruna Ichinomiya, who enters the Mikagura Academy dreaming of a boarding school life filled with beauty. However, Eruna finds out that in the culture clubs, there is a rule that battles that are fought with special powers decide a club representative's treatment. Through various circumstances, Eruna becomes a representative of a club, and is thrown into the fray.

Last Note, a composer of various Vocaloid songs, began the Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku light novels inspired by his own songs last July with illustrations by Akina, who also provided the artwork for the original Vocaloid videos.

Reading the premise make it sounds like Medaka Box with Vocaloid-themed music, might give it a shot. It is also surprising on how Vocaloid songs gets more anime adaptations due to the success of Black Rock Shooter and Mekaku City Actors, I would gladly welcome more of it.

What's next, an inevitable Touhou anime adaptation that will never see the light of day unfortunately?

The first episode established the premise in a somewhat shaky way. It's not as terrible as KagePro, however for a premiere, it just follows a standard prologue formula of having the main character being introduced to a prestigious school and had a mascot that's just there to summarize what's the school about, as well its mandatory rules, how the school works etc.

What's interesting is that Eruna is basically a rather excentric girl who just so happens to fill the role of someone eager to harass people of her own gender for comedic effect that's normally reserved for secondary characters in other anime (harem especially). But that's not something she just has in her personality, it looks like she could more or less end up becoming a leader of a not-so-ordinary club as she progresses through character growth. Good luck for her trying to find her female love interest in a show that's not a series about cute girls doing cute things.

The humor certainly is very expressive, it's heavily filled with old-school emotions that's normally feeling rather tame in anime these days. The visuals are attractive, however the backgrounds looked like they are rushed with pastels and very little exquisite details to be found when it comes to interior designs.

The first episode certainly isn't enough for an anime as it looks like it left with a somewhat abrupt cliffhanger involving the encounter between two main heroines, so establishing of what's coming more will probably be fitted in the next few episodes so I'll try to book my expectations for now.

Episode 1:

Weird start so far. I mean, I'm not sure I'll like this Eruna girl with all those delusions of hers. I think the series has a fun premise though and I want to know more about the other club members like that dude from the art club.

Also, "club battles"? I'm getting some funny ideas about this already...

Hafta agree it is kind of an odd setting...not quite sure what to make of it yet. A sort of slapstick battle shounen in a highschool setting type of story?
