Sushi and Beyond [Anticipation]

Found this on ANN earlier today:

Quote:
British travel and dining journalist Michael Booth's book Sushi and Beyond (Japanese title: Eikoku Ikke, Nihon o Taberu, or "British Family, Eat Japan) will get a television anime adaptation that will begin airing on NHK World for an international audience on April 12. The series will also air on NHK for Japan beginning on April 16.
Staff:

Director: Rareko
Animation: Fanworks

More info...
Quote:
The book follows Booth, his wife Lissen, and two kids Ansger (6) and Emil (4), on their 100-day trip to Japan as they try a wide variety of Japanese foods. Booth was inspired to make the trip by Shizuo Tsuji's book, Japanese Cooking, A Simple Art.

.... eh? O_O

I don't mind though, being based off a book about food is going to be nice.

Is it just me or we're getting more food-related anime series recently (not that I complain).

I'm going to give this a shot, seeing I can easily watch it on TV since I had a channel in which the show is slated to air.

This is just strange. It's like making an anime based off a NatGeo documentary.

I knew this rang a bell. Looking up the book I found I bought it as a present for a friend a little over four years ago! Maybe I'll have to ask her if I can borrow it some time!

Sounds like an interesting series, can only hope it gets licensed or subbed in some way.

I knew no one would sub or stream this, but it's a real shame because it's hilarious. A great take on culture shock and Japanese cuisine. In the premiere the Dad takes his family to piss alley in Shinjuku for yakitori, and one of the chefs is Suwabe Junichi. There's also a nice live-action sequence at the end, documentary-style, about the places visited.

Maybe someone like Doremi would take a stab at this - it seems right up their alley. Probably be pretty easy to sub, too.

I watched the "episode 0" of this show on NHK World, where the first episode has probably been aired already. I loved how the father wondered by beef had to be so soft.

Japanese love shows where foreigners talk about how wonderful Japan is. I wouldn't be surprised to see more "foreigner discovers the greatness of glorious Japanese culture" anime shows in future.

Except that's not what this is at all. It's a pretty unvarnished look at the country, at least based on one episode (and the reviews I've read of the book).

Japanese. The lack of a subber wouldn't be a problem otherwise...

That actually was pretty funny.
Also, I watched it without checking the cast, so when I heard Eiji Takemoto as Dad, I almost jumped XD And yeh, Junichi Suwabe was sudden as well.

Another fantastic episode this week - all about tempura. Includes Harajuku girls, Tokyo heat, the impossibility of finding any "addresses" and of course, the divine tempura itself. Also - when Tachi goes on his walking tour at the end he goes to the Tenya (the chain restaurant) in Kagurazaka, my old neighborhood (the camera tracks across from Iidabashi Station to the Kagurazaka slope, with the Starbucks on the corner).

It's only in Japan where you'd see machines complement the traditional. Makes me want to try out some tempura myself. I also realized that the "mixed vegetables fried with egg batter" I tried and enjoyed long ago itself a kind of tempura.

By the way, is it really that hard to follow addresses in Japan?

Tokyo specifically is justifiably infamous. None of the streets are straight and there's basically no conventional address system at all. Even people who've lived there for decades get lost all the time. Most other cities it's much easier.

Damn, just saw the first episode in the raw, and that makes me really wish someone out there would sub it. Loved the live-action sequence.
