Seems a pretty competent adaptation for now.
I personally feel they should follow the Ange Vierge route (which, IMO, it's the most well done mobage adaptation for now), but we'll see. With JC Staff doing so many shows this season and this being "low key" (not really, but just for the sake of categorizing) I fear this may be the one hit most with possible animation quality drops though. |

With the mention of alternate dimensions I couldn't help but think of Soushin Shoujo Matoi from last season, which I think did that better. Of course, it may not have done it better solely within the first episode, so I may be judging this harshly. Also I don't think this show is trying to go for the same sort of atmosphere, so comparing them is probably unfair in the first place.
Anyway, this feels like a decent beginning. It felt like a bit much to have Mana drop her gun and fall back, paralyzed in fear when the monster stoof up again near the end. Maybe she was supposed to have tripped on the rubble, but if so that wasn't exactly obvious. The OP kind of spoils that the girls will be getting upgrades. I mean we could have guessed that they would need to, given how ineffective they were in both of the fights we saw, but it might have been nice for them to have left us at least a little bit of surprise for when it happens, you know? Anyway anyway, the girls seem decent enough, although they haven't all been clearly identified in my head yet. A single episode isn't really enough time to clearly establish the personalities and identity of five different girls, and the fact that there were a bunch of other side characters taking up screen time (some of whom were also girls who happened to resemble some of the main characters, at least at a glance) didn't help. Assuming this show follow standard patterns for this sort of thing however, we should get to know each one over the next few weeks, so I'm not too worried. The one with amnesia is obviously plot-relevant. I'm sure we'll learn more about her, and the mysterious figure behind her in the OP, later.

Apparently, this show adapts "episode 1" from the game. The main character of "episode 1" is Tsubame, the girl with amnesia. I imagine there must be quite the mystery about her.

Whose bright idea was it to combine slice of life and action? It doesn't work. I got no indication that the very bland looking monsters were threatening anyone apart from the fighters, and the first half of ep 1 was completely relaxed; no tension, sense of threat, or sense of purpose built up whatever. Focusing in part 1 on the heart-power genki girl who would usually lead a magical girl team, then sidelining her in part 2 for the quiet troubled girl who would normally be a Homura-style lancer, felt rather confused as well. Not liking it so far.

I don't know if SoL and action can combine or not, but I'm not fully sold on how this show is handling it so far. The first half of Episode 1 feels like a reasonably competent K-On type of show, and the second half of the show has well-choreographed and visually appealing action scenes, but two flaws stand out: The transition from SoL to action feels kinda clunky to me, and the action side is totally lacking in dramatic tension (for the reasons you laid out, Ghostfriendly). So the SoL side is nice enough, but nothing special. The action side is visually appealing, but lacks good intensity. The characters are reasonably likeable, and I get their issues, but I'm not quite feeling it yet. The show feels a little too safe, maybe? I found Episode 1 decently entertaining, but also lackluster enough that I'm not entirely comfortable recommending it even to Ange Vierge or Symphogear fans. At the same time, the action side takes up enough focus that I wouldn't promote the show to people just looking for a K-On type fix. I guess one good thing is that there's nothing particularly offensive about the show, and there's a general air of competency to everything (especially the character designs), it just feels a bit off. It could get better in future episodes, with Tsubame's memory issues offering the best argument for future potential.

Episode 01
Pretty boring stuff. Felt like the return of Ange Vierge. What was up with those outfits though? One group was in maid uniforms and one was in bikinis. Why? There's probably some reason behind it and I'm not that curious to find out. There was a general use of dull colors which is there if a story will get dark later on. But I don't see that happening here. The animation had probably a couple of nice moments, but overall was pretty average. This episode didn't leave a good enough impression. Too boring to continue. |

I have only one complain. Why the hell made Tsubame main heroine right down with mysterious back story, instead of focus on Tru heroine, the Io-chin.
Just kidding (no I am not), animation seemed much better than I assumed, not great, but better. Also sad they removed "player". Flirting with girls is what was most important in game imho.

I really don't get the otaku's need to have a specially-made placeholder character to self insert into. They should just learn to experience the story through a proper character like most sane people do.
In any case, I'm glad they didn't shoehorn one of those self-inserts into this one.

And "proper" character can't be guy? Why you dismiss someone who isn't even here for not having enough personality?
Anyway "romance" was part of game and it was fun. Now that fun. Now fun part of it is gone. It can be good anime, but it's waste regardless.

Sadly, that's often the case when it comes to VN protagonists or the "player" in mobage. Some don't even have names and are never shown. They're quite literally a placeholder, not a proper character.
