Preferably something with a fantasy element, can be modern fantasy or classic, or historical. The more epic the better.
By character types I mean that the girl's companion isn't a typical average boy from a shounen harem, like in Fate/Stay Night. A good example of what I want to see would be Code Geass, in which Karen (and C.C. in a way) are the doers, and Lelouch is a smart and cool strategist with a power of his own.

Utawarerumono. This and ToT are practically harem show.. but the main guy aint your ordinary harem lead. Should fits your requirement for cool (none pussy lead

My Otome Sifr fits into the description, if you haven't seen it yet. My Otome generally works like that - girls do fighting, their masters (both men and women) are usually nobles with good tactical skills.

I'll second Spice and Wolf though it is a bit slow at times, but it fits the type you're looking for I think.

Also Katanagatari, where the female lead Togame is the "strategian" and I wouldn't write Shichika as a standard shounen character, though he might seem like it at first.

How does Horo be considers as action girl on par with the other girls proposed in this thread. Dont ge me wrong, I love Horo, and S&W are one of few titles currenly resides on my shelves due to its awesomeness (aka, I bought it, not download and burn on DVD) But to categorized Horo as action girl is way overboard. Its is simply not what S&W is.

What about Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu, a new anime whose first season has just finished airing? Ryner is more of a Crouching Moron Hidden Badass type of hero, though.But Ferris is an action girl through and through. I think if it were more about Sion & Ferris, it would have fit your description perfectly. (Sion is the third main character).
