I'm just being really paranoid with the spoilers (even though nothing has actually been spoiled) here. My policy is, you can never be too paranoid with spoilers (unless you actually suffer from paranoia).

Uh, I'm fairly sure the official story is that the initial plan was for the protagonist of F/SN to be a girl and Saber an actual male Arthur, but since they were trying to sell, you know, a porn game, they switched their roles around and had to come up with Arturia was a result.

Loving the show so far. I am one of the unlucky sods that hasn't read the LN, but I've played the F/SN VN and watched the anime adaption (which lacked, but I still enjoyed for the atmosphere).
I really like the way they're addressing a lot of questions that went unexplained by the F/SN anime, such as what happened to Matou Sakura, and actually giving a bit of an explanation as to why King Arthur is a woman, as opposed to Shirou's immediate hormone-driven acceptance of the fact. Score for him, I guess. I would recommend everybody investigate FS/N -before- F/Z, if only the anime if you lack the patience for a VN, for two reasons. 1. F/Z tips its hat to F/SN viewers with surprisingly long appearances of what would otherwise seem like otherwise unimportant characters like loli Rin. 2. F/Z seems to have a lot of answers, while F/SN has the questions. Better to ask the questions before you get the answers I say. Overall, I'm quite surprised how much I'm enjoying F/Z. I thought it would hold little interest due to already knowing who won the 4th Holy Grail war, but it's finding plenty of alternative ways to hold my attention, such as a brilliant introduction of Bluebeard, and some great character establishment scenes such as the discussion between Saber and the Einzbern. Question though, they made a big issue in F/SN about the fact that Shirou had zero magical capabilities, and yet it was so rare that he managed to summon a servant, however... In F/Z I see multiple combatants with low or zero magical capabilities, isn't that strange?

Yeah, FZ is one of those prequels that you appreciate more if you already seen the main series.
I think the thing with Shirou was that not only does he have little magical talent and somehow manages to do so well because of his Servant (even having it in the first place, but it was a bit rigged). With Ryuunosuke, he has no magical powers that we know of other than doing research from that old book, but it doesn't seem like he cares more about killing people in fun new ways than magic. Kariya was forced "experience" with the nasty worms. Waver has some training since he's at the Clock Tower, so it's not as if he's completely in the dark, more like a kid with book knowledge but no practical knowledge (like Rin). And everyone else is qualified for having good magic abilities. So I think it's more that he did so well that floored everybody, even people with more training. I don't think any of the other Masters expects them to do very well. Same with Shirou. But with Shirou...never underestimate the power of Main Character Syndrome. Of course he's not gonna suck ass! (at least not all the time) he's the main character! |

On the other hand, if Nasu had swapped the genders of Shirou/Saber, it would have made a more interesting Fate route, a yuri-licious UBW, and the best part of the game impossible. Not to mention that with male Saber all of zero's servants would be dicks Anyway, loved ep.2, and already missing that 1-hr format of ep.1, not too mention lamenting for the coming winter break |

Don't worry the master seems very knowledgeable about this as the exchange. And you should remember this time most of them is very reliable in combat.

chibipicpic pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Ryuunosuke, Waver and Kariya all seem like unlikely candidates, but my question has been mostly answered by alumnox and chibipicpic, so ultimately I think it just comes down to Rin trying to give masters who successfully summon servant more credit they they deserve for her own ego in F/SN, haha.

Kariya is member of the Matou which is one of the 3 founding mage family involve in the grail war. He didn't have enough magic circuits but zouken increase that with the worms which will kill him in a month. Ryuunosuke is the only one without ties to magic before the grail war.

Thinking about it...Kariya and Shirou are kinda similar in that they both had "zero talent" and no training, but both have potential. It's my understanding that Shirou had the circuits but needed to tap into more of them and Kariya just didn't have a lot of circuits to begin with so the worms filled that gap? I'm sure if Kariya hadn't left the family and trained as a magus, he would have been super awesome. But then the whole storyline for FSN would be screwed up, especially Heaven's Feel. So no super awesome Kariya for us. I still love him though. |

I'm feeling a lot of love for all of the characters so far actually. I have a tendancy for loving even the most cowardly bad guys if they're well designed characters, and good depth seems like something F/Z has plenty of!
Reserving my judgement for daddy Tohsaka though, haven't learnt much about him, and Lancer's master also hasn't had much of a chance to show his character. Even Waver, as pansy as he is, seems like a well fleshed out character. I think I may just be over excited because apart from Usagi Drop (which was alright), I haven't enjoyed anything in the last few seasons.
