For me the episode was downright enjoyable ... although it was interesting to see how different some of the characters were. It is one thing when you see it in the manga source material and another when it is animated - sort of extra emphasis to drive the point of the differences home, perhaps?
Haruhi pops up in this episode, of course - and is still busy at work with her ... umm ... habitual activities, I guess? It's interesting that the series on the one hand does not really have a lot that is "happening", but on the other those who are familiar with the Suzumiya Haruhi franchise overall could have a LOT happening with each scene as they are reminded of other things (novels, anime adaptations, manga spin-offs, etc.) It really is coming across to me as a very "in house" production in a way, and it is tough for me to really grok an idea of what it is like for those "outside of it". Theoretically, intellectually I can, sort of, but in practice? One of those cases of "cannot un-see". But that knowledge is in many ways the thing that contributes to my enjoying it so much, I think. ^^ Anyhoo - the OP didn't do a whole lot for me, but I continue to like the ED.

That was a nice episode. Haruhi descends which was fun and I can't help but laughing at her trying to capture Santa . Despite the hilarity her mindset actually works. He very well may not exist, but if he did and she was unaware that would be unacceptable. Thus....capture!
Good little moments. Asakura with a facial expression of "oh crap" when she interrupted the confession without realizing. And also Nagato following up on that failed confession with a nice bit of cuddling in the cold. Props to her for a fairly bold move.

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas We wish you a Merry Christmas In the first days of Spring! Well, aside from those heartwarming moments of Christmas, we get to see that Fate continues to bring the usual gang together. Haruhi's still at it about that infamous chalk message, and it contributed to Yuki's first meeting with Haruhi. I thought the part where you can easily make a Kyon face by using only three lines was the funniest, but what tied in first place was Kyon's AHCHOO! and the Girl Who Leapt Through Fences. Anyway, on the next episode, we offer a moment of silence to Kyon's typical daily life.

Let's see, what did I like about this episode? The reappearance of Haruhi. And the way Nagato wrote "Merry Xmas" the right way around (i.e., the wrong way around, so people outside could read it -- the way Haruhi herself didn't). And now I'm struggling. For me, so far, there just isn't much there.
I had high hopes that watching the Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi last week would give me the full "Aha!", and things do at least feel a bit less weird now, but this still feels very slow and aimless and without verve. The characters all have as little oomph to them as this alternate-world Nagato does. Maybe I'm affected by the fact that seeing yet another anime confession interrupted made me roll my eyes. But I'll definitely be back next week, anyway. Maybe there will be more Haruhi. Or worlds will begin to intersect. Or Nagato will complete a confession. Or something. Anything.

Heh I'm use to the English voice acted version, so all the voices are really different anyway!
The fact this was a very festive episode was a little weird (been a nice warm spring in the UK to boot), but oh well! Oh the Merry Xmas being written differently by Yuki to Haruhi.... I think its a way to show the difference in there personalities. Yuki planned everything out carefully and wanted everything to be exactly right. Haruhi on the other hand acts on impulse and doesn't really pay attention to the details! |

As for Ryōko, that just happened to be bad luck...we can't have a fateful love confession this early on, otherwise, where's the fun in that?

After two episodes, I've figured out what this show needs. More of everybody who isn't Nagato. Kyon ... absolutely wonderful. Asakura ... interesting. Tsuruya and Mikuru ... colorful. Haruhi ... insane.
Nagato herself, on the other hand. She's ... well ... generic? The stereotypical blushing, shrinking violet. She just mostly drifts from one scene to the next, blushing furiously over anything that might lead to character development, prodded forward by the Team Mom, and occasionally drawing inspiration from escapees from the mental asylum. I'll admit, the main reason I got through this episode is Kyon (though I will admit that if this show were done from his perspective, then it'd slip completely into generic harem anime territory, but at least it'd be one that comes with it's own riff track.) Sure Haruhi comes in like a wrecking ball, but that's just par for the course for her. Speaking of which, it looks like the next episode is going to be about how an innocent literature club was terrorized when an escaped mental patient broke into their clubroom. Which will probably be worth watching ... so I'll be following this show for at least the next episode or two.

Something tells me Kyon must not meet Haruhi or something terrible will happen to him.
And Itsuki he has to show up soon. Consider Yuki, I was actually waiting for this kind of spin off for a long time. If Yuki actually emotionless. But this is out of my imagination. Just how many more years we have to wait for the main series? And turkey. |
