Valid point on the warranty, but that has nothing to do with risk and compatibility. The risk of playing a backup and damaging lasers remains.. even with an unmodded one
On the compatibility front: Games aren't "made to be compatible" with modchips.. They are just taken directly from the source DVD and made into ISO.. no patching, no nothing.. a modchip, unlike software, doesn't need patched games to play.. As I said.. take my word for it.. And since this is supposed to be a PS3 thread and not a "chipped is bad => swap is good" thread, and with the added info it is deemed illegal in some countries to modify a console and/or play backed up games on it, I will stop with further offtopic conversation.

Regarding patching; I suppose so, though I've yet to encounter a game that's needed patching to be compatible with SwapDisc. Unless you count rebuilding as patching, but that's possible with a single tool, unless you want to do it manually. I was mainly pushing the SwapDisc + Magic Tools method on the premise of a unvoided warranty and (usually) a lesser cost. On the original topic... What do you guys think about the Sixaxis controller? Do you think the motion detection will really make that big of a difference in games? Obviously it's not as versatile as the Wiimote. It'd probably be a dumb idea to use the PS2 controller like a racing wheel or even a light gun, unlike the Wiimote. And what happens if you're lying down while playing? Is it going to force you to sit up straight? Bah. |

While we are talking about the modding, ever wondered how long it will take to crack PS3? Because I won't be buying one until a) the prices go down, b) it has good games, and c) the ARRR! -factor.
By the way, I don't want to bother with swaps. One of our local stores sells pre-modded consoles, so I get it all in a neat package anyway, ready for playing. Get game, burn it, and play. And that, certainly, is one thing none of the new consoles can't do yet. |

So it is either a exploit or a secondary bios module soldered on it, so you could switch between them, similar to the psp. A) The price will drop, if sony revises the current mainboard. As soon as the ps2 and ps1 emulation is ready the ee+gs and ps2 ram will be chopped away and the production cost will much less. b)- c) it's not a trick it's a sony Last edited by Sides; 2006-11-15 at 17:11. |

bloody hell, if you got the money to buy this, i suppose you don't really fear opening it up, to have a snoop around, and worry about something going wrong.
I mean hell, its only set you back $600, big deal, get another one....

There's no doubt that the current supply of PS3's will be gone within days. If Sony doesn't send out more, it'd be a travesty to their finances. |

Not to be unappreciative, but I need evidence (or very reliable heresay), not speculation, as I plan on reselling mine factory-sealed. Of course, if Sony doesn't replenish before the holidays, I'll hang onto it and list toward the middle of December to capitalize on the Christmas frenzy. If Sony does ship a substantial amount between launch and then, I'll probably lose profit waiting like that.

im so jealous of you Fatpianoboy, you got insurance money maker right. I'll keep it sealed and wait and see as well. But i like your thinking, I hope you earn alot of money on it,that you can buy two PS3, or in Nintendo terms, four Wii to impress your lady friends
who said Sony is evil? It brings joy and livelyhood to people, even when you haven't even opened the box...which is the only thing sony did right

A word of warning as I've removed a few posts for inadvertently providing more information than we find acceptable: Talk about mod chips, the PS3 being a target for crackers, etc. is probably "OK" in the general sense. Please keep that in mind and stick to "generics". Keep clear of posting information aimed at helping people take advantage of whatever exploits are discovered, etc. no links, no names, no software, no groups, no specifics.

I'm wondering if anyone mentioned these news that happened today for the PS3's launch.
Link removed from site From this, someone got shot trying to get his own PS3, a pregnant mother ignored her contractions to get one, three PS3 campers were robbed, one used his engagement ring money for his girlfriend but spent it for his own unit ("Stupid!" was the first word that came of out my mouth), and two gunmen robbed a retail store and stole 15 PS3s. So...is anyone here desperate to steal or hospitalize someone to get one for yourself or for significant other? I'll probably get one after Christmas or later so I can get one calmly and with no guns at all. EDIT: Also, with someone getting shot over this, Jack Thompson may activate his 'attention-whore' mode again and say that someone was almost shot to death for a video game system. Well, I think the launch of a new system has become sort of a social event.
Certainly I'm not crazy enough to dish out that much money and waste that much time camping on the sidewalk. I've hospitalized people for lesser reasons than wanting a PS3, though. I'll probably get a PS3 near the end of its development cycle. And Jack Thompson doesn't have much of a case for launch-day antics. Well, he never has much of a case for anything. What I'm going to find interesting is the obvious oncoming legal battles in Europe over PS3 importation. PS3 is being launched in Europe in, oh my God, MARCH 07. I'm not sure how they're going to hold out that long. It's pretty ridiculous though. |

Yea, people should just lay back a little bit. New, expensive consoles in the market. Big deal. I also read that some kid got beaten up, by a person behind him in the line, simply because the kid got the last console.
Come to think of it, perhaps *I* should start importing those consoles and rip off the fanboys. Business is business after all and if someone is willing to pay 1.000 € of some silly console, all the better for me. |
