"Even if she is fictional, it is still loving someone."
I like that guy's comment, personally. Also, another quip from a forum I visit, which was posted randomly in a thought-of-the-day type thread before this article was published: Quote:

Okay, that's a new low. Certain really nonsense nations have this trend where special interest groups would rather legislate their problems away rather than working to better themselves for the benefit of all parties.
I mean...I see where some really twisted logic can emerge where you can get the "mutual agreement to be together", because you can always draw a rendition of a 2D character who loves you, or at least makes you think he/she loves you. Therefore, no problems on the "mutual agreement" part, even if the normal person might be creeped out that one certain character has 50000 clones, all of which are "happily married" to some otaku and can't fight for "2D characters' rights". However, by laws of Darwin, these people can't reproduce, so we should be perfectly fine. In fact, due to this, I heartily support this legislation! Then the crazy nutters can happily pass away on their own. EDIT: In b4 age of consent of 2D characters. |

I'm surprised that there's so much kneejerk reaction against this idea.
Obviously, a marraige license to a 2d character would be vastly different from one to a 3d person. There are logistical differences. But I think it could be worked out to be beneficial. Basically, I imagine that it would involve paying a $100/10000 yen-ish license fee to the relevant government official, you sign your papers quickly, the government's spent 3 minutes of man time and made some extra money to pay for education, infrastructure, etc costs in this current atmosphere of economic hard times. Hard-core otaku are happy, the government gets a little bit of extra revenue, anime companies get some additional promotion, seems like a win-win situation to me. |

It's always the women who go around sneaking pictures of young japanese guys at Akihabara. It's always the women who even think of creating a petition so that they can love bishes til their hearts content. It's always the women... You getting my point? No use playing the gender card on me here, men are the majority for anime/otaku related problems, probably cause the fan ratio still falls heavily on the males. We want sexy male A to be with sexy male B = we just doujinshi our fantasies out. Or write fanfiction, but eitherway we get creative with our desires, we do not go seeking actual ways to love a fantasy like the way they're trying to do here with this petition. (At worst, i believe gay guys get hassled a lot, lol.) "I wish i can find a girl who likes anime." Is something i hear a lot... @ einhorn: You also forget that the creators of the characters may also be against the idea of selling their mental creations to random ass people. And then to even get a licence? What to thousands of guys who claim to be marrying "Haruhi" around the world or just in Japan? Claies is right tho, this is just to legislate their problems away, it's further escapism from reality on an entire new level, psychologically in the long run, i don't see it benefitting anyone. (Some kid rips a A1 poster of the 'married girl') Otaku: You killed my wife!! How dare you!??!! *stab, murder, kill* (Or imagine them making tens of various copies and plastering all over the walls of their entire home) *creeped out* Quote:
The sweet 'moe' girls are so quiet and shy, guys would never notice them irl regardless. And the key word about that sentence? They're 'teenage girls'. Still say it won't pass and the mountains of Japan will suddenly become a popular destination again.

Actually, if this is passed, and otakus can marry 2D characters, do they need written consent from each character's respective creator to do so? And can a character polygame?

If the petition was thrown around by girls and guys, then sure we can focus on both genders, but i think it's safe to say it's male otakus who are pushing this to be legalised, thus if the focus is on them it's not being one sided. Hell aside from me, how many other girls are replying to this thread? Males dominate the anime industry and related interests, that's a given, girls are a minority. Naturally we enjoy porn (depends on what tho), have male fantasies and lust over characters, however the extreme examples tend to be guys like this example here.
