You could always read the manga if you want the beans of situation.
Basically Garaa grew up in emotionally harsh environment(Understatement of the week!) found some temporary relief(Aunt tries to love him.) and then even that was torn from him. Leaving him even more damaged/twisted. Thus leading to our HIGHLY deranged and insane Garaa we know today. 1 question for you all. Does Garaa even sound like he's 12? |

I'm still pretty sure it's his Uncle!
Can anyone back me up on this? I can't view the manga right now. Here how about this?? http://www.narutoguide.com/biographies_Y.htm "Brother of Gaara's mother. Although of different sexs, the two are nearly identical." Being identical twins would explain it. |

Ok, I'm going back through my manga collection. And I believe I have found the in question relatives name: Yashamaru. Guy or girl name, anyone?
Also, in the unlikely event this character is somehow male I would say he would have to be somehow related to Haku as well. Because looking at the manga, really hard to get a masculin vibe here. |

i know for a fact that narutoguide throws incorrect info on occasion....so i wouldnt value it too highly. I have looked through the manga before, as this has been mentioned a while back, and i am yet to find anything that specifically says whether she's gaara's aunt or uncle (only references at all to their relation is her saying that gaara's mom is her sister).....but if all this commotion is because of narutoguide.....then im going back to my original assumption of her being female
oh....and if you really wanna know.....then you should ask someone who translated the manga, because im pretty sure they can tell just by the WAY she says things....(I think even something like the word "I" can have a masculine or feminine form in japan) |

umm she's his uncle. i check out the chinese manga. the i or you in chinese indicated that she is a he, and is gaara's mom's twin brother actually. they looked almost the same... expect that garra's mom had a more girlish look which is of course, natural.

Surprisingly enough, Yashamaru is Gaara's uncle. Just note the "-maru" in his name, that's only used for male characters. Don't doubt that, go to the Naruto Guide, read the manga, it clearly states that Yashamaru is Gaara's uncle and not his aunt. |
