Well, the first choice does increase points with said character, and it does open up more dialogue possibillities (Nanoha is sitting next to that character from now on, after all) but its hardly definite.

Depends on how far of the deep end you have gone, and how you go about it. Its possible to get close to one character, and switch to another, but depending on the dumped characters background, the way you handle it, and whom you leave him/her for, things might turn out bad.

I am speaking only for myself when I say this: I read fanfics to get away from reality. My life isn't perfect. I acknowledge that, but there are times I want to get away from it, and immerse myself in a world where I know what I want can never happen.

I read fanfics because it's my 'secret world' where I don't have to worry about the world around me. Once I'm engrossed in something, I all but forget about everything around me, which includes any problems that I may or may not have.

And on the topic of smoking, that is an extremely sensitive topic for me. I've lost family to it. I've seen people who've had their lives destroyed by smoking. I honestly find it a disgusting habit because of all the crap it causes to people's bodies. It's also something I personally would never do to characters who would never seem like the type to smoke, unless it fits whatever I'm trying to portray.

For instance, if I were to take Fate and take her depressing situation with her mother in a different light, I could possibly see her smoking, because it would somehow reflect the angst in her life, among other things.

Personally, I see smoking as nothing more than an aspect of one's personality, so to speak. I equate smoking to the personality of one who's has depressing problems in their life, or has had problems in their life.

I'm not sure if I'm making sense, but that's my personal view on smoking, and why I went out on a limb like that. The fact that Nanoha even took a smoke riled me up because to see someone like her smoke just puts a real nasty flavour in my mouth.

How this relates to why I read fanfics? It's because to me, fanfics are the perfect world I know I can never have. Although granted that if I were in their shoes I'd probably want to live the world I have right now, I am personally in a position where I want to live in their world.

I have no aspirations in terms of who I want to be in this life, because there isn't much here that I want to be. It's what I read or create from my imagination that I want, or to be more specific, the impossible. When I say impossible, I mean like ending up in a fantasy world, such as Nanoha.

At the very least, that's my personal opinion.

People don't start smoking because of problems, they start drinking (or get stoned)
Hence your view of smokers clearly has a flaw in itself... and many people have tried smoking because of peer pressure, plain curiosity, or just because they're bad at saying no without a good reason (or all three)... And they haven't kept on smoking.

I'm sorry that you've lost family to smoking, but it's still no reason to go off tangent because someone somewhere went and tried one cigarette...
...especially since nanoha was already slightly confused because of fate, even more confused because of candy's weird actions, and generally just having a weird day (she probably hasn't gotten used to modelling this fast), so i find it rather realistic for her to accept in that situation.

As for fanfiction, no one tries to make a 'perfect' world in a fanfiction, because it would lack a degree of realism... We all know that this world isn't perfect, so to sustain a better feeling of realism, neither are the worlds within fiction.

But seriously, this story relies as much on the imagination of you people as readers, as it does mine as a writer. There are all sorts of crazy 'I never thought of that before' scenarios hidden in this story, but it is up to you as a reader to unlock them.

Therein lies my issue. I'm looking for the unrealistic, for things that would never happen in a real world situation. To elaborate, I look for fanfictions where people take the entire package of a character, with minor modifications of course, and place them in situations and then grow from there.

The Nanoha I know of, particularly the StrikerS Nanoha, I know wouldn't ever let herself get into smoking, regardless of the fact that it might help her meet new people. That's one of the things that got me going on such a tangent. (And to think, I just had a calculus class when I write this ><)

On top of that, smoking is already a big issue for me since I'm really against it.

No offense to you smokers, but I have an extreme prejudiced view of smokers unless I'm friends with them, but even then I don't get anywhere near them when they're having their smoke. Call me a prude if you will, but considering I'm surrounded by smokers in my family, dad's side especially, I'm really bothered by it.

Unfortunately it can't be helped. If it's a plot device, I'm going to have to put up with it, but this has whole issue has now gotten me into a really sour mood. I really don't like the idea of Nanoha smoking, but this is the opinion of one person, so I can't do much, except voice my opinion.

… It’s my first day in a new school; I guess I’d feel more comfortable sitting next to another girl. Making my way over to the brown haired girl, I didn’t even have to ask for permission as she already pulled back the chair and motioned for me to sit down.

“Well, it looks like Yagami-san is already doing all she can to make you feel welcome. Would you mind helping Takamachi-san during her first few days?” Lowran-sensei asked the girl.

“No problem, Lowran-sensei!” The girl, Yagami-san, answered cheerfully.

“Good, then we’ll begin class. If everyone could get their books and turn to page 38…”

Class rushed past, and soon break time had arrived. I sat back with a sigh as Lowran-sensei left the classroom. While I am fairly good at it, English was one strange language. Hard to pronounce, and what was with all those ‘the’s? Lowran-sensei had fortunately decided to cut me some slack on my first day and hadn’t called on me to answer questions.

A small tap on my shoulder drew my attention back to Yagami-san. “So, you want to eat lunch in the cafeteria or in the classroom?” She asked me.

“Uhm…” I answered as I thought about it. “Well, I’d like to eat here, I don’t know much about my class yet, and I think this is a good way to get to know them.”

“Good thinking.” Yagami-san said as she unpacked her own lunch. “And since I’m the closest person here, Yagami Hayate, pleased to meet you.” She said with a small seated bow.

“I see you still make friends as easy as ever.” A new voice spoke from behind me.

“Fate-chan!” I exclaimed happily as the blonde hired girl pulled an abandoned chair over so she could sit at my desk.

“Nan ya, you two know each other?” Yagami-san said in surprise, her kansai dialect even more obvious.

“Yes, Nanoha and I are childhood friends, even though we never went to the same school together, we lived in the same neighbourhood, so we always played together.”

“Well now, that’s a story Fate-chan hadn’t told me yet. You have to tell me about that, or you’ll make me feel left out.” She said jokingly, making the two of us chuckle.

“Well, before that, could you finish telling me a bit more about yourself Yagami-san?”

Yagami-san waved her hand dismissively. “Hayate is enough. If Fate-chan knows you well enough to let you call her by first name, then I won’t be the outsider. I’ll just have to get to know you better so I can call you Nanoha-chan.” She said with a smile.

…

She really has a warm smile; it makes you feel really welcome.

“So, about me, I’m Yagami Hayate. I currently live not too far from here with my family. We’re.. sort of a strange bunch. My real parents passed away some time ago, and my new family is more like a gathering of acquaintances who decided to live together. I do love them a lot, though. They’ve been taking care of me for some time now. You might run in to them some time here, Shamal works here as the school nurse. Probably to keep an eye on me.

I blinked. “An eye on you?” I queried.

“Ahah.” Hayate rubbed the back of her head in embarrassment. “To tell you the truth, I’ve been getting myself into a bit of trouble. You see, my legs were paralyzed since they day I was born, but recently recovered, and now I can walk again.” She said happily.

“You didn’t recover completely, Hayate, you’re still recovering.” Fate admonished her friend.

“Ahaha” Hayate laughed again before ending with a sigh. “Fate-chan is right. I recovered mostly, but because my legs have always been paralyzed before, I have to be very careful not to overtax them. That’s why I’m carrying these crutches.” She said as she gestured to said crutches.

“I see…” I wondered what else had to be said. I’m sorry? You did good? I was shaken out of my thought as I noticed Hayate looking at me, as if she was searching for something.

“Uhm… Hayate?”

Almost immediately the smile returned to her face. “So, what are your plans for today Nanoha-chan?”

… Already calling me Nanoha-chan?

“I don’t really know, I was thinking of dragging some details out of Fate-chan concerning that boyfriend she couldn’t stop talking about the past month.” I said while sending a glare at my friend, who suddenly found the blackboard to her right very interesting.

“Heeh? You mean Kha? He’s a nice guy. Fate got lucky with him. Anyway, if you’re interested I could show you the good spots around the school.”

“I’ll think about it.”

Lunch period ended, and classes continued. As the class ended, and the students went home, I thought about what I could do. Fate-chan had slipped away when I wasn’t paying attention, and Hayate was packing her final things.

A: I have to track down Fate-chan. She is not getting out of this one.
B: Hayate offered to tour me around the school, maybe I should accept.
C: I could always go exploring on my own, hayate did say I could choose.
D: I’m done with school, I’ll just go to my room.

Sorry if I seem a bit harsh concerning this, but nobody's life is perfect and we all have problems. Yes, some people's are worse than others, but still we all have those. What is a perfect life anyway?

I personally don't like smoking either and I've lost family to it too. I'm very resentful towards the little sticks but that doesn't mean I'm gonna get riled up and make comments that can be considered agressive towards a fanfic writer.

Yagami-san waved her hand dismissively. “Hayate is enough. If Fate-chan knows you well enough to let you call her by first name, then I won’t be the outsider. I’ll just have to get to know you better so I can call you Nanoha-chan.” She said with a smile.

She really has a warm smile; it makes you feel really welcome.

“So, about me, I’m Yagami Hayate. I currently live not too far from here with my family. We’re.. sort of a strange bunch. My real parents passed away some time ago, and my new family is more like a gathering of acquaintances who decided to live together. I do love them a lot, though. They’ve been taking care of me for some time now. You might run in to them some time here, Shamal works here as the school nurse. Probably to keep an eye on me.

I blinked. “An eye on you?” I queried.

“Ahah.” Hayate rubbed the back of her head in embarrassment. “To tell you the truth, I’ve been getting myself into a bit of trouble. You see, my legs never worked since they day I was born, but recently recovered, and now I can walk again.” She said happily.

“You didn’t recover completely, Hayate, you’re still recovering.” Fate admonished her friend.

“Ahaha” Hayate laughed again before ending with a sigh. “Fate-chan is right. I recovered mostly, but because my legs never worked before, I have to be very careful not to overtax them. That’s why I’m carrying these crutches.” She said as she gestured to said crutches.

“I see…” I wondered what else had to be said. I’m sorry? You did good? I was shaken out of my thought as I noticed Hayate looking at me, as if she was searching for something.

“Uhm… Hayate?”

Almost immediately the smile returned to her face. “So, what are your plans for today Nanoha-chan?”

… Already calling me Nanoha-chan?

“I don’t really know, I was thinking of dragging some details out of Fate-chan concerning that boyfriend she couldn’t stop talking about the past month.” I said while sending a glare at my friend, who suddenly found the blackboard to her right very interesting.

“Heeh? You mean Kha? He’s a nice guy. Fate got lucky with him. Anyway, if you’re interested I could show you the good spots around the school.”

“I’ll think about it.”

Lunch period ended, and classes continued. As the class ended, and the students went home, I thought about what I could do. Fate-chan had slipped away when I wasn’t paying attention, and Hayate was packing her final things.

A: I have to track down Fate-chan. She is not getting out of this one.
B: Hayate offered to tour me around the school, maybe I should accept.
C: I could always go exploring on my own, hayate did say I could choose.
D: I’m done with school, I’ll just go to my room.

So your Fate-chan is dating some OC because you simply don't want her to end up with your Nanoha?
Definitely that's the worst possible characterization for my favorite character from the original series
