Mitsuteru Yokoyama (横山光輝) passed away

Offical news:

His most famous manga works are Gigantor (Tetsujin 28), Giant Robo, Babel II, God Mars, Sangokushi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and Mahou Tsukai Sally. Some of his pioneer works are highly influential.

Yes, he died of severe third-degree burns when his bedroom caught on fire - most likely from smoking a cigarette while asleep.

However, his passage is being overshadowed by the jubilee of three Japanese hostages that were released from captivity in Iraq.

It's a real shame.
I found most of his series very enjoyable.

It seems we're approching that time when most of the good, classic, directors and creators will be dying off. Although I agree that people should be happy at the release of the hostages, I hope people still take the time to acknowledge his passing.

This really is unfortunate. Yokoyama was a great and very influential manga-ka, he will surely be remembered.

Yokoyama...didnt he direct a animation movie? Well I am really sad that another great artist has passed away. Those kind of things always depress me but I guess his legacy will live on in his works. Best wishes for all of his family members.

Oh dear God no.

I didn't recognize the Romaji at first but as soon as my eyes set on the kanji--I'm here writing down my reaction.

To me, 横山光輝 will always be the Manga Master who completed the ambitious project of "三国誌 "--known as "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" to the Western World. I remember seeing history come alive as I lost myself in his art. This Japanese re-telling of a time of a divided China was so well-done to the effect that some parents in Taiwan (mine included) encouraged their kids to this series of several dozen volumes--something unprecedented in that culture.

Sensei, you will be sorely missed. Tonight I weep for your passing, and wish that your work will be known to rest of the world.
