No, actually, they don't make any money when it airs. On the contrary, for these past-midnight anime productions, they almost always pay the stations to air it (sort of like "infomercials"). It's not like primetime TV that makes money off of advertising revenue; how many viewers and advertisers are you going to attract at 1:00am? Otaku-targeted anime like this one only airs on TV to promote the show's merchandise; that's how they make their money.

Sales is not good, true tears DVD volume 1 only sold 2,869 copies.
(note: Gundam 00 25135, Lucky Star 22248, Clannad 22314, Nanoha 19961, Gurren Lagann 17211, .hack//G.U. TRILOGY 16978) http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...1168328827/290 Last edited by tejvenim; 2008-04-04 at 08:12. |

2800 copies
total price $270 income 2800 x $270 = 756,000 assume 50 staffs, average salary = $15,120 I think $15,120 is too low. The anime staffs create one of the best anime in many years, yet they get paid $15,120 for their talent and hard work. In my opinion, the writers deserve $1 million because they written a very nice script. |

Please remember that you are quoting the retail price ($260/$270 for 13 episodes). Just because the retail price is $40 for each DVD, that is nowhere the amount Bandai receive.
For most sales there are two intermediate steps you have to take into account. Lets look what happens to that retail price of $40. Now typically the Retailer will buy the DVD from a Distributor who buys it from the Manufacturer. As a rule of thumb, you can double to cost at each stage, so if the end cost is $40 then the following applies. Manufacturer (Bandai) sells it for $10 (to the distributor) Distributor sells it for $20 (to the Retailer) Retailer sells it for $40 (to the Public) This is why on-line shops can sell DVDs for over 40% discount. Typically you can see discounts on the standard $30 anime DVD as much as 43% (Retail price of $30 being sold for $17.08, example Kanon Vol 1). If we look at Bandia Visual, Freedom Vol 1, Retail Price $39.99, can be purchased for $27.08 (32% discount). So please don't allocate $40 to Bandai for every sale. It's closer to $10 per sale and that still doesn't take into account of manufacturing costs, advertising, production costs, etc. |

Keep in mind that the animators don't get paid based on merchandise sales. They're paid by the frame/foot/cel/etc. So, in fact, it doesn't matter how much an anime sells for most of the workers; the animators themselves get the same regardless. Also, keep in mind that it's not as if one person is doing nothing but this show for a whole year straight. But, of course, that's not to say that animators have a very good standard of living; most of them definitely would be better off being waiters. It's the lowest among low, as far as jobs go. Even if the show were selling like hotcakes, it wouldn't raise their standard of living.
That being said, the production committee that financed the show isn't just counting on DVD sales. CD sales also factor in, along with sales of the upcoming PS2 re-release of the game (and the upcoming PC release of the next game in the "tears series" by La'cryma). You could consider it an investment to raise the profile of the franchise. By the time you add up all the various merchandising, Lantis, Bandai Visual, Circus, Broccoli and all are probably going to do all right. Not every show has to sell tens of thousands; the best-sellers help finance the lesser-selling ones. |

I think prolly it didnt sell very well because while it IS a good anime (dont get me wrong I loved it)
but it's kinda one of those where once u know the ending ur like "oh well......no real point in watching it again" TT is awesome but rewatchability on it may be a little meh.....and at only 13 episodes that makes it even tougher |

I really wonder if Bandai ever plans to release true tears (or sola). I've watched the entire series a few times now, but a hard copy DVD of true tears would really be nice. The "official" websites for both look like they haven't changed in months.

I've been seeing multiple retailers listing a release date of July 21st for this, such as:
http://www.animecornerstore.com/truetears.html Considering how long it's been sitting in limbo though and the fact that they still don't have an official cover I'm a bit skeptical. Sola (the one I want) is sadly still listed as TBA too. |

True Tears is being shown here in Los Angeles in channel 18.2 with subtitles, episode 3 on monday just aired, anyone with a digital box converter can see the channel. Dont think Bandai has anything to do with this since I don't see any credits from them.
