I have met people in real life who are interested in anime too, though this is rare. It depends on how we look upon the situation. I will feel lonely when I'm surrounded by people who have totally different interests as I do and this not only goes for anime, but for movies and music as well. But when I get to meet people who share the same interests as I do, I will be more than happy because I know I'm not the only one. While I was serving National Service I was posted out to work as a Provost (military police). I thought I was the only one who likes anime until I met someone else who likes it too. Then through him, I discover a few others. This made me so happy.

Well, I did manage to get my younger sister to watch Haruhi, she quite likes it. My best friend used to watch Dragonball Z. Other than that, I doubt anyone I know would even consider not classifying me as a weirdo if he/she knew how much anime I watch.

And why did I never mention this before?
I apparently got my two younger sister interested in anime and manga as well, so I have two people who are always around me who shares the same hobby as I do. Though not as much though |

Not many people take anime seriously... They think it's kid's stuff. Which is sad.
I'm going into high school and I'm going to a boarding school... The only posters I have are those of anime, and now I'm nervous that people'll think I'm an idiot for being a fan.

The natural response might be... "oh, I don't know... there's two of us who clearly aren't kids and then there's you who seems insecure enough to have to assert that."

I do have several (male) friends who watch and enjoy anime, though at varying levels. A couple are only interested in mainstream action (like Naruto or Bleach), probably because they don't want the social "stigma" that comes with anime. A couple are honest fans of anime and will watch a lot of things. Only one is willing to watch and discuss virtually anything, even if they're not "guy" shows. I also know girls who watch anime, but they tend to be the fangirl "OMG like, she is so kawaii ~ desudesudesu" type, so I can't say there is a lot of discussion to be had between us.
Admittedly, a lot of my friends had the stereotypical idea that anime was "a kiddie thing." Then I showed them the first episode to Elfen Lied, and the juicier snippets of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Though many of them still don't watch anime, they now all at least accept my hobby as a mature form of entertainment |

@Vexx: Actually, I won't bother explaining to him since he doesn't even watch anime. My friend and I looked and each other and shrugged after that guy walked away. Besides, anyone who think Elfen Lied is for kids then something is wrong with them. But eh, he doesn't even watch anime to begin with, lol.

I'm not sure if he was the one who introduced her to it or not, but the little sister of a guy I know on another forum ended up watching some subtitled Cardcaptor Sakura recently. She happened to pick up on some of the honouriffics and decided she had to try them out on her older brother. The way he describes it, his initial reaction was to get a chill down his spine. Then he threw a pillow at her. |

The funniest experience I had in regards to the cloistered nature of anime, was an incident back in 97-98 (thereabouts) when I asked my then girlfriend if she wanted to watch some anime with me, and she proceeded to slap me and ask how I could watch something so despicable. You see, she was under the assumption the anime only equaled hentai/ero (specifically the tentacle porn that was oh so popular back in the day), so she had thought that when I was asking if she wanted to watch some anime with me, I was really asking if she wanted to watch some porn . That was probably the "loneliest" moment for me (someone I had developed feelings for could so easily assume the worst so quickly), in regards to trying to expressing my fascination with anime to others, but in retrospect it became a very comical moment.

There are a ton of casual fans of anime, those who just watch certain shows they have available on the television and there are moderate fans who look for shows that have yet to be released in the states that are connected to another show.
essentially, every hobby is a little lonely, whatever you collect, watch, or play, you do it predominately alone, but if you truly want to, you need to socialize and talk about your hobby with others so you can see that it's not nearly as cynical as you think it is. |

being an anime fan is (and can be) a lonely "fandom"..a guess it depends on a number of things like where you live like myself and for the sake of my own well being i will just call it "rednecks R us" having little to no anime fans with in the area (let alone people who even know what anime is..).......so i guess that paper was right...."lonely but not alone"

General embarrassment . She was already fan of American animation, and she simply had bad info regarding Japanese animation. So, after I went through the regular spiel regarding anime (we've all had to do this spiel at least once for a loved one or a friend ), we sat down to watch a title (I forget which title we watched (I think it was either Ghost in the Shell or El-Hazard (are those two different enough ))).
She never really gained any fascination (beyond a technical standpoint) for anime, and that was pretty much the end of that particular discussion. (We eventually broke up a few months later over my fascination with Troma films, but that is another story...) |
