I hate it, I hate hate hate it whenever some Asian nationalist insists on the "you Western people should shut up because you don't understand us and we have our way" bullshit. Guess what? A lot of people who criticize your precious regimes are Asians, and if they're not (oh god, white people! how dare they!) then it's also perfectly their right to criticize your precious, precious regimes, and they might actually understand it more than you think. Some might be remnants of racist and colonialist views of old, fine, throw them off the window; but others see the Chinese Communist Party and realize what kind of horror show we're having for humanity's fastest growing great power. Others, that is, who are experts, academics, visitors of Asia, emigrants from Asia, descendants of emigrants, and maybe just simple people with working brains who see a horrific tyranny for what it is.

And. We. Love. China. We just fucking hate your government. Why do you think the Taiwanese are so un-eager to rejoin the mainland? Old grudges? Last I heard the KMT's not ruling the island country no more, and new generations have been coming and passing for a while by now.

Honestly, the hyper-nationalism of the "new" Chinese is freaking me out these days. Is this the kind of attitude for the slated new world leaders...?

And finally, should I mention where the ideology of communism came from?

Again, a reminder.

If you want to discuss China in a manner unrelated to their day of anniversary, I'm sure we've got a thread around here for that. Keep it civil.

Now, I am not saying we have a perfect government, and it certain adopts a totally different system from Western Countries like the USA. I think what the Chinese government is using now is not called Communism. It was communism for a couple of decades but now we call it socialism. From what is see it's a hybrid of capitalism and communism, but we changed it to best suit ourselves. In my view true communism never really works, at least economically. Politically China is ruled by a single party, which isn't really a big problem unless big issues spring up. (e.g. crazy guy as leader). In which case, I believe there would be an uprising, partly because we would rather want peace than world wide humiliation. In the Cultural Revolution, it really is a disaster for our culture, our values and our internation image. All that is starting to change with the past few party leaders, boosting more on economic reforms. Many people in China can't even feed themselves, nor they can receive proper education. We first tackled that, then we start to do something on the political system. I cannot say whether China might stray onto unwanted paths in the future, and i certainly do not want to see that happen. However, given this not-so-open government system no one can be sure. We just have to watch how things unfold. All i can do now is wish the best of China. Long live China. (Remember, i never said long live CCP, but that doesn't equate not loving the country)

P.S. i am trying very hard to be objective. Please excuse me if I occasionally let out some emotional feelings (against that Philippine)

Ahem. It's probably time to update your Taiwan file. Ma Ying-jeou of the KMT has been President since May last year. Meanwhile, Chen Shui-bian, the former pro-independence leader, has been sentenced to life in prison for corruption, a surprisingly harsh punishment which he claims to be politically motivated.

Since coming into power, Mr Ma has been working towards better relations with China while continuing to reject the mainland's claims of sovereignty over the island. As expected, not much love is lost between the two territories, not even after China graciously lent national treasures to Taipei's National Palace Museum — Taiwan fears that the communists would confiscate any historical artefacts it sends to the mainland in return.

But where there is money to be made, the Chinese are always ready to talk. That's real-world pragmatism for you, idealism be damned.
