This is besides the point. The question is not if a cartoon character can turn you on sexually but if you would want to marry one. It's not that it would have been normal if that guy had married his 3D-porn collection or had just been fallen in love with it.
The post I was responding to said, "How can someone get off from a cartoon?"

I don't know about you, but I take "get off from" as meaning physical attraction.

It is also an important difference if someone doesn't love you or is principally not capable to.
Perhaps that was a poor war of expressing what I mean there. Let's put it another way, is there any fundamental difference, other than social acceptablity, between having a crush on an anime character and having a crush on an actor or actress one will never meet in their life?

We went through this a thousand times already but it's also besides the point. A real AI wouldn't be any different from a human in any important feature that drove those AI lovers away from humans in the first place.
That was just an offhand comment on the closest situation I could think of that would result in the possibility of marriage.

Unrequited love is by definition one sided, so it's not really a relationship between a guy and a girl at all. But like I said, perhaps that didn't get my meaning across quite as intended.

multipleblogs are reporting that a fan of the Nintendo DS dating sim Love Plus (you know, the really creepy one) liked his virtual lady so much that he decided to marry her. For real.

Japanese man marries video-game character.

http://www.boingboing.net/2009/11/25...wedding-a.html

On Sunday, a man named Sal9000 married the love of his life. Her name is Nene Anegasaki, and she lives inside of a Nintendo DS video game called Love Plus. The wedding took place during a Make: Japan meet-up held at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In attendance were a live audience, an MC, the bride's virtual video game girlfriend — who made a speech — and a real human priest.

The event was livecast on Nico Nico Douga, a popular video sharing web site.

Only in Japan...

So, what happens if he falls in love with a real woman? I suppose that's a big 'if' considering he's marrying a game character.... but he will have to go through the divorce procedures before being able to re-marry.

"Let's get married! Oh wait... I'm still married to my 2d wife inside my Nintendo DS, I'll have to divorce her." Upon which the real woman slowly creeps away looking scared.

But honestly... I can't help but laugh when seeing the whole procedure in that video.

So I'm guessing if the DS breaks that means she is dead.

Honestly I'm more taken back, not by the fact he wanted to marry a videogame character, but by the fact that a marriage between a videogame character and a person was even allowed to happen.

Man Marries Video Game Character

Edit: Found the thread

Things can't get any worse than this, even marrying a robot or a doll is more humane. At least they have a physical form.

Its funny that he had "other" game character girlfriends before he "met" her. I mean the game IS design for you to date these game characters.

Would be really funny when people on the net show him even if he "married" her, she is still a video game character that can be played on by other people hahaha.

So guys what would be worse than marrying a fictional game character?

"She's not cheating on me! Sure, she does other guys when they play, but I'm the one she truly loves!!"

Ugh. How on Earth did this get past the legal system? Isn't it rape or something? She doesn't have the ability to say no! She's not even a real life person, how does that work?

Well she does "fall in love" with the main character or w/e. I bet she is saying the same thing to those guys like she does to him.

It's just an elaborate way of saying "X is mai waifu". Now, if he tried to apply for the tax advantages married couples get, it'd be different.

Oh wow, that totally sounds like an awesome idea for a manga. Like those movies where a couple decides to get married but one of them needs to get their previous marriage annulled without the other finding out...

I still can't help hoping that this whole 'man marries game character' thing is all some convoluted 'viral marketing' scheme to publicise the game. If so, it's certainly worked.

Eh. It doesn't make me want to play the game. I don't do married women.

Hey wait, what? That makes me think... If the character is of japanese nationality, could you use this to gain entry to the country?

I mean the character seems to be valid enough of a person for a marriage to be allowed. So...
