The manga is still being continued if I'm not wrong. Just that scans haven't come out for a while. Think they've finished scanslating up to the latest volume already and are just waiting for a new one to come out.

cool i just dont get that why nice manga's like this dont get as much attention as naruto and gay bleach that have nothing more than laser beams and reviving the dead

I stopped reading this around chapter 40 a while ago because i really think it should have ended after that arc, But now after reading all the chapters it didn't turn out to be crap.

I like how it combines life of slice elements with the supernatural elements so seamlessly, Something i really haven't seen in other manga's. It ends around chapter 82 and the scanlations are up to about 75. So it won't be terribly long before we find how it ends.

I find the motivations of various characters a bit hard to understand in the 2nd arc. All the protagonists are pretty passive, whereas it's the antagonists moving the pieces. Basically, I feel the protagonists are a bit too chill about everything.

The chapters are so far apart in scan releases... I'm just gonna wait for it to be done before reading again. I keep forgetting what happened in the last issue everytime a new one is released.

What a hero. It's really sad for the fans when a long running fiction work ends unfinished because of tragic circumstances involving the author(s). That he worked to the last and finished it for us is truly noble in its own way.

Although, given the theme of the manga and the way it deals with death I can help but think that it is an oddly poignant event.

Respect, and rest in peace.

Wow, what the fuck? This is such sad news. The last blow I've had regarding an author's passing was when the author of the Kaze no Stigma novels passed away last year.

I really enjoyed Alive, and it was a great read (although I had mixed feelings about the ending, but damn! he was working on it even on his sickbed!).

R.I.P Tadashi Kawashima. You will be missed.

It's such a shame the anime was canceled. I hope some other studio encourages itself and picks it up after hearing about the author passing away.

I was saddened to hear of this author's death.

On the manga itself, one of the things I liked about it, especially in the earliest chapters, was that it was kind of an adventure story. That's a genre that's fairly rare in manga, especially one set in modern times. Later on it became more of an action manga, but it was still pretty good.

Also, I actually thought the characters had a touch more realism to them than is common in action manga. Especially the main trio of Taisuke, Nami, and Yuta. Some of this is due to the artists, who are good at conveying mood and expressions. Later on, lots of new characters got introduced and I lost some interest in the story, but, well, in retrospect it seems the author had other things to worry about.

Why did they cancel the anime? I bet a series promoted a s"from a guy who finished it while on his deathbed" would make him and the work famous in an instant.

Gonzo had announced that they would be animating the Alive manga, but then they went bankrupt and not a lot of info has been revealed since then until a recent announcement saying that it was officially canceled or something.

Yes.. and i'm glad they went down under. The reason for their downfall was the fact they kept doing the same weird rule of cool anime thing again and again every year. Also their adaptation based on mangas are notorious for their Adaptation Decay.(Just look what they did to Rosario + Vampire and Chrono Crusade!). If they ever did the anime, there's gonna be a lot of Alive fans screaming Adaptation Decay on their beloved series.

Spoiler for review: Alive is to its core a fighting shounen. Yet it differs from the usual formula by offering some really gore moments and deep immersion to its characters. This is what made it both good and bad. ART SECTION General Artwork & Backgrounds 3/4: The art has some really big fluctuations as it sometimes bad and sometimes great. There are moments that you think the mangaka is an amateur and moments you think he is top notch. It’s a weird feeling. The backgrounds do have some variety albeit they never feel awesome. It’s mostly rural areas, some city sceneries and military bases. At the few times it could show a lot more innovation, it preferred to stick to simple stuff. So it kinda feels repetitive and unimaginative at times. Character Figures 2/2: There is a great variety in body anatomy, facial expressions and funky clothing, making the characters easily eye catchy. Being a shounen manga, expect lots of naked females and sexual teasing, but it never gets to ridiculous harem levels; so it is nice bonus without feeling lame. But down to it, the thing that makes them unique is the way they express their feelings and that is what makes them great to look. Motion Fluidity & Visual Effects 3/4: The action itself feels a bit stiff at moments; part of the mangaka’s weird fluctuation in quality. Said battles are never really great as choreography or visual effects. In fact, they will feel to the most part very simple and average. What makes it more interesting is how many types of cinematics are used to continually show the characters’ disturbed mentality; even during battles. Thus the action feels less interesting as the fight each one of them has with his/her inner fears. You rarely get to see so much attention given to the angst in ones mind. It is also interesting to notice that there is a hell of a lot of gore and splatter in this series, most of which is usually not vomitingly gross and offers some really heavy shock value to the viewer. The graphic violence is not that high if you have read some heavy action titles like Berserk, but it’s still very high around Elfen Lied level. TOTAL FOR ART: 8/10 STORY SECTION General Scenario 2/2: Although by no means original, the core of the story is very intriguing. If you have read any X-Men or watched Heroes on tv, you will feel something familiar. It’s about several people around the world gaining mysterious powers that drive them to suicide or madness, and unleashing their resentment on others. Turns out it’s all part of an alien conspiracy involving evolution, but I will not say more just to save you the spoilers. It is not original but it is well though of. Just think of it as partly fighting shounen and partly psychological thriller. Side Stories/Extra Spices 2/2: There is a big number of characters involved in the story, some of which move in non-linear to time ways, and some have different agendas. This creates a huge complexity in the way the story progresses. It’s always that fulfilling but it really does feel like the story does not revolve around three people only. Form of Development/ Pace of Plot 1/2: Some parts are very interesting, some are boring and fillerish and make you wanna give up. The plot has many side characters and likes to slow as much as possible the actual story; so in all about half of the chapters felt unnecessary long or unneeded to me. You could take out half of the secondary cast without damaging the actual story. Believability/Reasoning/Realism 0/2: Nope, it failed hard on this part. All situations are resolved too conveniently and the author clearly creates mass slaughter of the cast every time he feels like he is in a dead end. He even used bad elements like amnesia, mind control and reset buttons to slow the plot even further. Thus the good idea of the story is practically ruined by bad directing. Conclusion 1/2: Yes, there is one. But it’s not something they couldn’t get to 50 chapters before! The story until then has reveiled all its mysteries long ago, the characters will have been running in circles and the final battle will feel like a repeat of what was unnecessarily stopped during the first half of the story. Another effect of the bad directing. TOTAL FOR STORY: 6/10 CHARACTER SECTION Presence & Personality 3/4: They are all extreme cases of cute, scary, pitiful or otherwise extreme cases of every mental disorder you can think of. Most feel like archetypes and that takes out some of their interest to you but they are otherwise well made archetypes and thus that is not a problem. I just want to warn you that most have a tragic past concerning close family and it may feel quite far fetched after awhile, as if there isn’t a single normal family in the world. Backdrop 2/2: Well, they all came from somewhere and they all have pasts and goals based on that. It is usually simple and happens through flashbacks but they all get one, so it’s a good part about them. Development & Catharsis 0/4: And here is where things really mess up. Although most character mature or generally change looks and perception of things, it never happens in a believable way. It’s always about being pulled by the nose to go find something they never chose, brainwashed, killed when no longer needed and generally not being in control of their own lives. Heck, when you get exposition moments before they die, you just see how bad and rushed it is all made to be. TOTAL FOR CHARACTERS: 5/10 ENJOYMENT & OVERALL SECTIONS: 5 I really liked how each one of the characters was given a spotlight at some point, how their mentality was presented and how they came to terms with their personal issues. At the same time I didn’t like how unnecessary long the story was and how ridiculous all battles were resolved. The pacing of the story is terrible and you don’t feel the characters have control over what they do. They are puppets at the hands of the mangaka and that damaged the overall a lot. As for the gore and splatter, it was a nice extra but after finishing the story I see how it was mostly flashy shock value to pull you in.

klare Senior Member Join Date: May 2009	Spoiler for volume 21 (end): Taisuke managed to capture Yuichi, Ghost killed Shigeki and everyone was freed of his mind-control the US president launched the nuke missile but Yuichi destroyed it with his power and saved everybody (yeah sounds unbelievable) Ghost brought Yuichi and all his companions to leave Earth, resulting all ablility users returned back to normal human, end of story the final pages are to show 5 years later
