The Reaper who comes in Spring is part of the school's urban legends and the reason Kazuya get's labelled as such is because he's Asian, which is very rare in the school. Basically the students love urban legends so much they forced him into the role due to his unique features.

Very very meh of a first episode... I almost fell asleep, really.
If there was one strong point in this episode........ I guess would be the loli's cuteness, but that isn't anything special to say the least...
The mystery and plot didn't seem very promising either.

Shame... I hear this is 2-cour too. I hope it gets interesting in the future...

Now, this is what I call a fantastic first episode. Characters and setting were introduced very nicely. I'm loving the visuals of the OP - the song not so much, but it might grow on me later. Good production values all around, although I thought the musical placement was lacking. The music was so overly present that it eventually faded into the background and I forgot about it.

The characters are very colorful (that pompadour, holy christ!) and fun. Grevil is fabulous, and Kazuya is a perfect sidekick so far. His interaction with Victorique are very enjoyable. I thought Victorique looked very cute, but I had no idea she was THIS adorable. The yawn, the rolling around on the floor, the way she behaved like a little kid going to Disneyland for the first time when Kazuya brought her to town... HNNNNNGGGGG. I'm very curious to find out why she's apparently locked up inside that library, which was incredibly humongous. Great architecture.

While I was completely enthralled by everything else, I have to admit I didn't find the mystery very engaging. It was pretty boring in fact, since it was very easy to figure who the culprit was. Hopefully, it will be more interesting to find out what her motivation was. We can't forget the heart, it's an integral part of the mystery.

PS: I hate how they pronounce Victorique "Victorika" instead of "Victorku". Ah well, I'll get used to it.

Yeah, I agree, I don't think Kazuya is that spineless at all. The way I see it, like you said he just won't bend backward to do silly things to just anyone but because he chooses to. Remember that due to that stupid rumor, all the students in the school is avoiding him, all he got is that hyperactive teacher and a letter from home. The teacher even says outright that he doesn't have any friends, maybe Kazuya wants V who doesn't treat her as something to be avoided to be her friends, that's why he does all that. I mean, he chose a Japanese Obon dance, not just any silly dance, something that V probably won't understand so that he can talk and explains it to her.

Also, he does showed a bit of spine in things like confronting Drevil about taking all the credit, and even when seeing Victorique's many luggages he put his foot down and forces her to bring what's necessary instead of just being a pack mule. Also, the letter mentioned that he can go there due to his grades, which means that even if he's no Victorique's level, he's not that bad himself. I hope it will come into play somehow later on.

Kujo is clearly not completely spineless, as he did stand up for what he thought was unfair for Victorique (stealing away her kiss and yacht) but I consider that to be part of his strong since of honor. That being said, he isn't exactly that bright as he did end up almost going on a one day cruise with Grevil :P

I noticed this on my second watch. Yeah she's a lot more hyperactive comapred to what I imagined her (being definitive and final about her word, overall dreamy-head-in-the-clouds personality but at the same time no nonsense) can't say I dislike how they showed here though.

I thought that the pre-established relationship between Kazuya, Victorique and Grevil in the novels was much better, though the anime's take on it was okay as well. As for Avril, I think I have an idea of where they're going with her now that they've changed the timeline a little. If my earlier assumption about the drama cd story making it's way into the anime then the fact they've been so secretive about her and her VA makes a LOT of sense . I think I know what you're talking about here, and I do hope they added it in. going by the list duckroll posted, it should be after this arc so fingers crossed.

This somewhat annoyed me, especially since the name is traditionally a masculine one. I guess they didn't want to throw people off to much but still.

What your saying s sound, but I personally like to see how the characters meet and developed from the start, to help me see how much they had changed/developed and how their relationship advanced. The scene where Grevil came to ask Victorique for help is the best illustration for that imo.

In the novel, I felt like I was watching a sketch from a comedy show, but with characters who appeared in a previous sketch that I didn't watch, and felt like I was somewhat messing out on the joke. I felt like I had to read their first time doing this routine to really find Grevil asking for help again as fun as it should've been.

In the anime, you can 'connect' more with Kujo when he first sees this man with such amazing hair walk in, how he is being used as a proxy for Victorique and his annoyance, and you can see how ludicrous the whole thing is.

As for Kujo dancing to Victorique, well, let's face it Kujo is helpless when it comes to women XD Sure he did stand up to her when she brought all that luggage, but that was because he wasn't going to carry all that (and since it was yacht there going to, not a refuge ship :P) we kknow that he will allow any woman walk over him due to how he grew up and how he was taught about how to treat women.

I checked duckroll's post, and like I suspected, you're right that's the storyline for episode 4-5. God, the lol's we'll have ...

I should mention that all I know about GosickS is just from the drama CD's, having not read anything else aside from the main series. I look forward to the second half of the show when they go more and more into those stories.

On the anime, I think I'm growing addicted to the visuals of the opening. looping it endlessly now @_@ I wish I knew who worked on it ...

A somewhat disappointing first episode for me too. The mystery... was not much of a mystery at all. There was no suspense, and the transitions felt a little abrupt to me.

Hmm, when you put it that way it certainly sounds more appealing as a first episode, especially when drawing in new viewers is also necessary.

I'll also be with the anime watchers after the first few episodes since my source exposure is the same as yours (novel/drama cd) with the first vol of the manga. I won't spoil myself further anymore and will look forwards to the rest of the story (especially whatever overarching plot may be in store~).
