For all Emma fans out there, here is the rebirth of the Emma thread. Now onto the news. Iichan recently posted the scanns for the raws of Chapter 48 and let's just say this chapter means a lot of things will be happening soon!

Emma's back in Britain and she has asked Lady Molder to teach her to be a lady and apparently William's mother will be the one to teach her how. When I first read the summary I immediately thought "My Fair Lady" except with a much more compitent main lead than the musical. It will be interesting to read the details once Iichan has the translations completed

I wonder when volume 6 comes out, I need more Emma! This may be a little sadistic of me but I can't wait to see the evil Viscount Campbell laying the smackdown on Emma and everyone who knows that. I love those soap opera-type twists! But with the manga moving at such a slow pace, what's the anime going to do when it catches up? William and Emma elope and run away to Australia?

Its more than likely that the anime will end with a more "happy" ending - i.e. William and Emma eloping to America.

Reviving this thread with the latest chapter released by iichan, chapter 33.


The background story for Richard Jounes and his wife, William's mother, was touching. It was good to see a softer side to stone-cold Richard.

Also, anyone who ever entertained any thoughts of any non William-Emma pairings can basically throw in their towels: It appears that there is absolutely nothing that can stop the two of them now. I've heard rumors about stormy weather coming up for the couple in future raws, but... when did outside forces ever affect the outcome of the primary relationship, be it a manga or Victorian romantic novel?

Pity, pity. Well, it was good knowing you Hans, thinking that you once had the potential to supplant William.

Yeah, I used to think Hans was interested in Emma, the way he just kept staring at her. I never liked him though - too gloomy and too creepy. He couldn't make our Emma happy with an attitude like that. I think he might go well with Adele.

For those interested, Kadokawa Comics has begun publishing Emma in Chinese. Volume 1 is already out. If you are in Singapore, drop by Comics Connection and ask for it. The chinese name is "??". Its slightly more expensive than your usual manga volume though.

Finally bought vol 1 in chinese! Yay! Am really happy. I hope they release vol 2 soon. If anyone has read vol 6 in japanese, can you post a spoiler? I just read chapter 38 from iichan, and I feel real awful, held in suspense.

Exactly who is that guy with the beard? He looks so suspicious! And I actually felt really upset when I read about Richard Jones' manipulation. Evil fellow. Am utterly crushed.

I don't think he really does, but imagine the shame of a whole Viscount's daughter being dumped by some nouveau-riche upstart in favour of a MAID. A common maid of all works at that. Even if he doesn't want William, there's no way he'd let something like that happen.

I was thinking that in truth, he really looks down upon the Jones family, but maybe he needs the financial backing? Maybe the viscount actually needs money but it's not obvious. He's just 'lucky' that his daughter actually fell in love with william. However, he still doesn't seem to want to associate with them, as though they are some kind of low life forms.

But the Viscount doesn't know where Emma is right? I think it is more likely that the father is behind all this as he he seems more like the type to make the marrage go through at any cost and upper class pride and all that.

The Viscount doesn't like the Jones because they're not of noble blood so he treats them as lowly commoners. Problem is he's in a lot of debt and needs the money. Thus as much as he dislikes the Jones (he threw away the glove he used to shake hands with William's father) he still needs them. I think kidnapping Emma has more to do with paying the debts than aristocratic arrogance because that's more of a real and present threat than injuries to his pride

there's also hints that William's father maybe involved with the plan to kidnap Emma. He sent a letter to the Viscount after Emma was kidnapped saying everything will be just fine. That's just my speculation at this point but I sure hope it isn't true cuz William is not gonna like that

Oh and another thing...

The note did not say that Emma was in America. William looked at what the seal on the stamp said, Burnley, and then determined where Emma was by looking in an Atlas to find where Burnley was.

Burnley is in Lancashire, United Kingdom. The map that William is looking at show Accrington below and to the left of Burnley, The map I looked at on Multimap.com shows Accrington in the same place. Plus, in the upper right corner of the map you can see the letters "a, s & h", just guessing but, the whole word is probley Lancashire. Of course William being in the merchant business could have determined that ships leaving Burnley around the time the note was sent were heading for America.

Woot! chapter 46 came out and guess what

William finds Emma! But that was really quick though. I was expecting the manga-ka to have something develop in between the reunion or do something but after only 6 chapters they're together again. Too bad I can't read the Japanese raw but it's still nice to see them together even though William gets hit in the face by a tree branch

I, too, am a little disappointed that William found Emma so quickly. I was hoping to see him get more and more desperate and Emma get further and further away from him and then, just when he's about to give up, some tiny clue comes in, he follows up on it and ta-daaa! Aww shucks, the mangaka should watch more soap operas. Oh well, all's well that ends well.

This brings to mind a potential tie-in with some details that were revealed in earlier chapters:

I was predicting that Emma will be appointed as governess of the Molders' two children. I remember when Emma started to work for the Molders, we were told that they could not find a governess to teach the children. Surely, Emma is a viable candidate?

Hmm, that's an interesting thought there shadowmoon. But the thing is Emma doesn't know German (at least at this point the mangaka didn't say she did) although she does know some French. It seemed to me also that the Molder children didn't know English, or at least not very well. How will she be able to teach the children if she couldn't even communicate fluently with them?

Then I have to hope that learning German will be part of Emma's training by Mrs Trollope and Lady Molder. Actually I seem to recall the Molders wanted the kids to learn English and stuff that would require a full time governess. Pretty much like what William went through when he was young. So I think there is hope for Emma after all.

Furthermore, I am thinking about the bigger picture of the storyline. It's more than just whether William and Emma find happiness in the end, but also how William deals with the problems of class distinction that others will pile on him, and as for Emma why not give her an opportunity to show that someone from the "lower" class can climb up the social ladder, becausebeing a "commoner" does not have to equate with being stupid or uneducated? The manga is titled after her -- I think she can be a heroine.

You have a good point. But how much more up the social ladder is a governess from a maid? I suppose there is more respectablility there but that still doesn't mean Emma will be treated on equal grounds to the aristocrates and wealthy merchants. Personally I don't think she ever will be. Perhaps the opinions of certain characters will change with the development of the story but on a larger social scale she's just one person causing a ripple that will eventually level out.

Ack. I should not have used the term "social ladder". Sorry. I wanted to convey that Emma is able to prove herself not just worthy of William, which I have no doubt she is. As in, I think she wants to accomplish something on her own terms as well. Hmm, not so much climbing the social ladder, but rather just doing something worthwhile, to be proud of, for herself too.

I see now and I totally agree with you shadowmoon. The driving force behind mangas like Emma is to both tell a love story and also to show the strength of the human will. I'm sure Moari-san will do both, we just don't know how

And to Itorivia485, (just to be safe I'll use spoiler tags)

Emma and William did kiss when they met at the part when Emma went to the dinner part with William's mother and she did hug him when he came to the Molder estate (and it was a nice hug too!)

But regarding your complaint, since this is a historically based manga, as far as I know back in the Victorian era a man kissing a woman or vice versa would be considered a very outragous thing to do in public. Kissing a woman's hand is perfectly alright but on the mouth...back then it would have been quite scandulous. Besides, Emma's personality does not call for great swoons of passion, she's too shy and lady-like for that. And William, well he's more worried about being able to see Emma and be with her than anything else. Perhaps in the future when the two of them will have more time together we will get to see more fluff but until then knowing the two of them will be able to see each other is good enough for me.

William looked so sad when he found out that Emma was not returning to London with him. What would have Emma done? Just be a figurehead so that William can see her 24/7? Men these days. I am more interested in how William's mother will train Emma since both share similar backgrounds -- only this time, Emma has the courage and determination to beat the social structure.

I have my own misgivings on how far Emma can advance herself. She still has a maid mentality which she wants to for maybe even needs to do something (housework) and as long as she still has actions like that it is unlikely that she can break out of the social ladder system for that time.
Granted that it will take time to adjust herself, I'll have to she if she changed in the coming chapters.

I think Emma just isn't use to being pampered and letting other people do work she could do. I don't think it's impulsive, rather just a habit but I don't think that'll interfer with her climbing the ladder. After all, "cleanlyness is next to godlyness".

I'm really impressed that Emma won an Excellence Prize in the manga section of the Japanese Media Arts Festival this time! It's a fairly major award, I hope this means that Emma gets more support. I just hope that it doesn't drag on overmuch.
