For me the action part of Kurenai was the least compelling aspect of the show. It's all about the characters and their interplay. This was the first time I had heard Yuuki Aoi voice a role (at fifteen I believe), and she was just extraordinary as Murasaki. I think it was also the first time I heard a performance by Sawashiro Miyuki; now she's one of my favorite seiyuu, with two excellent roles this spring as Serika in Space Brothers and, especially, Fujiko in the Lupin III remake. All the supporting cast are excellent as well.

There are some terrific ensemble scenes that are rare in anime where characters typically speak their lines one at a time. The three-way interchange among Murasaki, Shinkurou, and Yuuno (that "evil woman"!) is one of my favorite scenes, as is the remarkable sixth episode which I won't spoil here. This show is one of the few I know of where the actors first recorded the dialogue, then the characters were drawn to fit their performances. It allowed the actors a degree of spontaneity that's much more difficult to accomplish when they have to adapt their speaking to match what's happening on-screen.

I'm looking forward to my DVDs arriving any day now.

Since no one suggested it yet... I think you should try Kimi to Boku.
It's pretty much about the everyday life of adolescence.

Gokusen is pretty cool too I think.

Second H2O.
I would recommend HanTsuki : a realistic romance about two hospital patients.
