Finally watched the movie. I really enjoy the trip to London and it's nice that they have a chance to perform there twice.
So this whole movie is mostly concern how the original four are planing to return the favor to Azusa for... being such a lovely kitty angel I guess. I can't really say that angel is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about Azusa, but I love that Tenshi Ni Fureta Yo! so who I'm I to complain. I felt sorry for Yui though. Azusa has been acting super tsun throughout the trip like calling her creepy and elbowing her like that. Doesn't sound all that angelic to me you know? Anyway great movie nontheless, 10/10. |

I really don't have anything to say about the movie- I guess it was just the perfect way to end the series.
I guess my only gripe is that I didn't get to hear Train-D in the movie, one of the tracks on the OST. Quote:
映画『けいおん!』テーマ曲&オープニング曲: Unmei♪wa♪Endless! K-On! Movie Insert song & OP song: Unmei♪wa♪Endless! 映画『けいおん!』エンディングテーマ: Singing! K-On! Movie ED Song: Singing! It was a nice B-Side to the single though. Quote:
If you're actually looking for the song composed for Azusa, "Tenshi ni Fureta yo!" (Touched by an angel), it's on the Ho-kago Tea Time II (CDJapan | iTunes JP) insert song album, and the Ho-kago Tea Time in Movie (CDJapan | iTunes JP) insert song album.

I would try and post my screenshots here, but I can't effectively do that. Therefore, this will have to do. The way it's organised, the images are reached by scrolling down a short ways... Last edited by teh_nubkilr; 2012-07-20 at 23:24. |

So the award-nominated K-ON! movie has been released on DVD, BluRay, and on the internets (though the last part should be said with an "arrr, matey!") It got pretty high marks during its run in Japan, and the parts of the fan community that don't bemoan it as the harbinger of the apocalypse of moe that's "ruining" anime; likewise give it decent marks.
Today's review seeks to answer the deep questions (as I am contractually obligated to produce at least one tl;dr post per year): Is it worthy of the attention of the casual viewer? Is it a good introduction to the franchise for someone who's never seen K-ON! or read the manga? Is it really the harbinger of the apocalypse of metal anime apocalypse? Spoiler for the first six minutes:
Now that I've gotten that out of my system, the next three minutes completes the recap and then we get to what the story is really about. Forget all that stuff about going to London. That doesn't even take up more than a third of the film. The film, instead, is about how do they want to remember their senior year in high school? How do they want to be remembered? And, most importantly; what can they do to thank someone who, in a very big way, has made it all possible for them? Those three questions drive everything the girls will do in the film ... from how they carry themselves through their graduation trip, to the things they do in the process of writing the song. And to further heighten the impact, the movie very tightly focuses itself on Yui. The others have their parts to play, but in the end, it's Yui who is the protagonist. It's Yui and her friends marching inexorably towards their graduation. It's Yui who struggles to express her feelings towards the impeccably reliable Azusa. That's what makes this movie work so well. She's headstrong and she's something of a practical joker; and has a habit of always biting off just a little more than she can chew. That, when combined with her friends; who very much play the parts of her id, her ego, and her super-ego; drive the story, make opportunities for hilarity to ensue, and create, in combination, a compelling super-protagonist that almost any person watching the film can, in some way, relate to and follow without having ever seen an episode of K-ON! before in their lives. The first ten minutes of film set a strong pace that defines the rest of the movie. The film also remembers who its fans are. There are many, many, opportunities for the girls to act as they do in the anime. There are lots of tie-ins, shout-outs, and call-backs to even small things in the show that will make the observant fan go "Ohh, I see what you did there, KyoAni." And, it wouldn't be K-ON! without at least one groan-worthy pun stretched into a running gag, because Houkago Tea Time loves their puns almost as much as they love their sweets and tea. And the shiptease. Good heavens, the shiptease. Final scores for movie reviews are given relative to other movies that I've seen ... which is why this film earns an 8 out of 10. Relative to other K-ON! it's easily a 10/10 ... an excellent retelling of the second season's already excellent ending arc. Pluses: - The film is easily accessible to those who are unfamiliar with the K-ON! franchise. Watching the raw, without benefit of understanding Japanese, was a fulfilling experience all by itself. - The characters, taken together, make for likeable, and easy to identify with, protagonists. - The comic timing is well-done, and most of the humor doesn't require that one be a fan of the show to get it. - Visually, it is excellently done. No, it isn't quite the scenery porn that the Haruhi movie, or even Hyouka are; but it stands up very well on its own (and it's also light-years beyond the anime.) - This movie averages one animated song performance every eighteen minutes. Which puts it right up there with, say, a season of Metalocalypse. - We finally get to see a montage of the girls showing their work ... a lot of legwork went into that song. Minuses: - It's K-ON!, so the characters aren't especially deep or complicated. Especially not at a first glance from a new, uninformed, viewer. - The world of this movie is very rose-colored. It's almost distracting how clean and idyllic the world of K-ON! can be sometimes. But, then again, the movie shows that you don't need lots of grimdark and shades of gray to tell a compelling story. - Some of the humor still requires being Japanese, and a fan of the show, especially, to get. - Yui, taken by herself, is something of a divisive character. Many can appreciate her spunky naivete. Others will be off-put by her tendency to grab the idiot ball with both hands.

That was an interesting movie. I watched it yesterday evening, but decided to sleep on it before posting a review of it.
First of all, I'll say that it was an enjoyable watch. It had a lot of excellent scenes, and it was visually beautiful in many key spots. But what I found different about it is that it didn't quite feel like a movie to me. In some ways it was like a movie. The first few minutes were very movie-esque. The slow, panning shots of Yui's bedroom before Yui wakes up. The highly dramatized music playing in the clubroom. The early reassurance that the characters you knew and loved from the TV show are still the same (which I think is much of the point of that first club scene). But a movie tends to have a clear premise, a clear climax, and a plot that clearly builds up to that climax. Then a short aftermath. That's not really the case here. The trip to London is too long to be a mere side-story or subplot, but it's also not long enough to truly define the movie. If somebody asked me "What is the K-On! movie about?", I don't think I could just say "It's about them going on a trip to London, England!" I guess it's about the unique relationship dynamics between Azusa and the rest of the K-On band (Yui especially). That seems to be the common thread stretching through just about the entirety of the movie, and it is pretty well developed. The problem here, for me, is that I actually felt that the TV show did complete justice to this, especially the last couple of episodes. So I can't help but think that the trip to London is what the movie should have been about. That it should have been stretched out more, that the final London concert that the K-On! girls participated in should have been the climatic moment of the movie. That this would have made it feel more like a true cinematic experience, and not like a few consecutive TV episodes of K-On spliced together to make a movie. As is, the last quarter or so of the movie makes it feel like just a grand exercise in filling in a gap left by the TV show chronology. Still, it was an enjoyable watch. Some lists of pros and cons in the tl;dr tags below. All-told, it was a nice watch. In truth, it probably exceeded my expectations some, in spite of the flaws I did point out. The K-On! franchise always struck me as a really hard one to turn into a movie (at a creative level, obviously not at a commercial level), but KyoAni did a pretty good job of it, all things considered. 8/10 is my final rating for this.

I personally ended up giving it a 9/10 because taking into account that K-ON never exactly focused heavily on plot to begin with, I judged it by how well it stacked on top of the original seasons. In that aspect, I thought they did beautifully; not only did they continue the story in a way, they also played around with elements that added depth to events in the first and second seasons (even paying tribute to them, KyoAni style). The animation looked "Hyouka-stunning" at points even, and overall it stayed true to K-ON's "not-perfect, but perfectly lovable" animation style. Plus I loved how they spent time actually recording the existing songs again for the movie, instead of just shoving in the studio versions; it really gave it that "live" feeling that enhances the atmosphere.

When I first heard about the K-On movie I was afraid that KyoAni was just going in for an easy cashcow, but I could tell (and not just from the animation, but also from the dialogue, writing, and voice-acting) that the full team behind this really were trying to make something special with this (and I think they succeeded). A serious effort deserves a serious review. I do think that KyoAni succeeded in the sense that: 1. Somebody new to the K-On franchise could enjoy this. I agree with GMT on that. 2. Existing K-On fans should really enjoy this. 3. The K-On movie does succeed at being a franchise highlight in terms of overall quality. Quote:

One thing I probably didn't delve into enough was how well the main cast as a whole came off. I didn't feel like either of them were short-changed, and the chemistry between them was simply delightful. And they were all very true to character. I could kind of tell that Yui and Ritsu's seiyu were really hamming it up for this movie, but that's to be expected. They didn't overdo it, they just brought it to the right level for charismatic characters in a movie.

Yeah, it could be strongly argued that the film might be better served if they'd rolled the ending credits after that last shot of the Boeing 767 flying off into the snowy night, followed by that panoramic vista of the Palace of Westminster and the Thames. It would've been hard to fault them if they'd not done the last 23:20 of film that followed that scene. The film would've been about 87 minutes long, but that's maybe five minutes shorter than the typical light comedy. They could've easily made that up with a little more padding of the London trip.
Then again, they had five days, (less one, when travel time is taken into account.) It's just enough time to hit the big tourist traps (assuming you start early, and crash late.) Given that this is the ADHD-Team (theme song: Dun-da-dun-duuun . . . oooh, shiny!) we're talking about here, it's somewhat difficult to imagine the London arc being made much longer without starting to feel cliche (haha wacky Japanese tourists and tourist traps) and repetitive (given the nature of the girls, it'd turn into Just Another Afterschool Tea Party . . . In SPAAACE LONDON!) Especially since you'd have to re-architect the whole film to minimize the whole "we should do something for Azusa" plot; or re-work that subplot to move a lot faster (which, arguably, would hurt the opportunity to build on and expand the interpersonal dynamic in ways not already covered in the show. It's also, technically, doable . . . but Azusa knows better than to leave her "reliable" senpais on their own for any length of time. ) Spoiler for Singing in the rain, I mean English:

Guys, I need help. ;-;
What's the name of the song that plays about an hour and twenty-six minutes into the movie, when the classroom concert is about to start? It's the one about raindrops or whatever. I really like it, but I can't find it anywhere at all. |

Finally got a chance to watch... nothing particularly amazing happened yet I was entranced for the entire hour and a halfish. I figure this is the last new animation I'll ever get of Azusa, the Ritsu&Mio comedy hour, Mugi fantasies, and the rest so I was raptly focused.
I also figure the "Death Devil" gag up front is the closest I'll get outside of the ED rock videos to what they might become as a grown pro rock band....
