Now that I've seen these episodes I can review them somewhat.
Full episode details follow:
Spoiler for Episode 3:
Yamato leaves Earth and gets a sendoff by the Admiral Hijikata (Gideon) on the Battleship Kirishima.
The Gamilas are watching but aren't sure what to make of this one ship. It isn't like one ship from an inferior race that can't break the light barrier can be a real theat.
Yamato's main staff discuss the Wave Motion Engine, their means of breaking the speed of light and getting to Iscandar and back within a year. Also discussed is the Wave Motion Gun, a weapon they designed based on the new engine technolgy as a effort to overpower anything the Gamilas might throw at them.
Yuki seems sad about Sasha being alone on Mars. As Yamato passes she delivers flowers for the dead while others look on.
The Warp test shows that no one really knows what will happen, just that it should work. They set course for Uranus and warp at 36 space knots. They end up unexpectedly at Jupiter. Something unexpected got in their way and they guess their course was altered because if it. The engine power transfere sytem is malfunctioning as the main engine is offline. They manage to find a floating continent in Jupiter's atmosphere and make an emergency soft landing there. The Rocket anchor is used to slow them down. They come to a rest in a small river.
Analysis of the continent and the plantlife on it suggests that it is not native to the Solar System. It had to have beem moved here from wherever the Gamilas have come from in an effort to support their Gamilasforming of Earth after the humans surrender or die.
Back on Pluto, Schultz is enjoying a message from his daughter back home when Gantz calls to inform him that the Earth ship suddenly arrived at Jupiter, which should be impossible for an Earth ship (or Terron vessel as they call it). They call the local refueling base commander and have him (a rather effeminate character with a twin tailed cat) send his ships to destroy the Earth ship. The base commander thinks sending his four ships will be overkill since the Earth has no weapons that can piece Gamilas armor (that isn't entirely true, but it is relatively true). Three destroyers and one Heavy Cruiser head out.
Back on Yamato they have figured out the continent is not native, which means their might be an enemy base there. As soon as they make that deducton the four Gamilas warships appears on the radar screen. "Battle Stations". With the engines down, Nanbu says they can use their Type 3 shells effectively, but they have a shorter range. Kodai would rather use the Shock Cannons to get a range advantage. Engineering and Sciences say they can bypass the main engines and get off a few Shock Cannons shots...they only need a few more minutes to get the engines working.
With the power diverted, the three main turrets are ready to fire. The forward secondary is loaded with Type 3 shells. The first shot misses, but the next two destroy a destroyer and the heavy cruiser is single shots. The remaining two destroyers fire, but the missiles from the first are shot down, and the second only gets off one shot before Yamato's secondary gun fires shells into it destroying the vessel. The remaining Gamilas ship retreats.
With the engines fixed Yamato takes off and gets several tens of thousands of kilometers away from the continent before the Captain orders the Wave Motion Gun tested on the Gamalas base. Sanada objects because they've not tested it yet. But might as well test it now, because if they can't later...it won't do them any good.
The Wave Motion Gun is fired and destroys the entire continent. Nanbu is really excited by this weapon. But it did way more damage than the scientists expected. It is a weapon of immense power. Yamato leaves Juptier with Okita pondering the implications of having such a weapon.
Spoiler for Episode 4:
On Pluto Base, Schultz is having a talk with his blue skinned superior Geru (Volgar) via hologram from Balan. Geru is not entirely impressed by Schultz reports about this mythical warping Earth ship nor the total destruction of the floating contintent on Jupiter. What he wants are prisoners. Schultz on the other hand is quite nervous about what could possibly have blown away an entire contintent.
Yamato is back in space. The staff is meeting in navigation to deturming their course out of the Solar System. Kodai wants to go past Pluto and finish the task that Operation M failed at a month or so earlier. Shima wants to head in the opposite direction to leave the system as quickly as possible so they can make for Iscandar sooner. While this is going on they get a weak UN Naval S.O.S. from the Saturn area, which is near Shima's route out of the system. Shima insists on going to their aid even though they have no idea who it is (signal is too weak to get an ID). Kodai want to leave it be as it will take them off their mission.
The debate gets rather heated when it is interrupted by some systems going out all over the ship. The Engine is melting down. Likely the shock from the Wave Motion Gun broke something. They need a specific isotope of Cosmonite to fix it. Hirata says they don't have nearly enough on board to fix a problem that large. However Niimi finds a source of Cosmonite they can get to...an abandoned Cosmonite mine on one of Saturn's moons, Enceladas (Saturn II). The trip will take them two days off from their trip to Iscandar, but they need the Cosmonite.
A Gamilas recon plane spots Yamato's course change. At Pluto, Schultz orders a recon base in the Saturn area to engage the Earth ship and capture some of its crew to get answers. A small Assault Ship is sent with a robot crew.
In the messhall on Yamato, the crew gets use to the new tech (OMCS) that processed any sort of food. Sanada seems to be eating tiny ration looking cubes while others are eating breads and whatever. He is into efficiency. Meanwhile Shima and Kodai have a talk about their arguement from earlier. Kodai understand why Shima wants to rescue the crew of whoever sent the distress signal while Shima understands that Kodai wants to avenge his brother's death at Pluto. They are quite good friends and it shows. Shima has a flashback to his father who was a Navy Captain. Sailors always help other sailors. Yuki is still not sold on Kodai. The ship's youngest crew members seem to listen to Yuki most (these being Yuria (Yuki's 3rd watch replacement) and Hoshina (the young security guard). An interesting note. You see several females in different department uniforms in this scene, including one in security grey. Thus they do have females in combat roles on this ship.
Yamamoto goes to the Zero-g hanger to hand Kato the approval for his increased ammunition request. They have a little small talk about the hanger and if Yamamoto is enjoying accounting...she says "yes" while looking way at a Cosmo Falcon.
Arriving at Saturn, Yamato lands near the old mining base. Sanada is in charge of the mining operations. Yuki Mori is assigned to investigate the distress call. She is to take AU09 and Nurse Makoto. Okita assigns Kodai to her as an escort, which Mori suggests she does not need. But it is an order.
On the Cosmo Seagull, Kodai and Yuki are more or less arguing. Makoto thinks there is something between these two...AU09 has no idea what she is going on about. Then Kodai asks an interesting question of Yuki...."Are you related to aliens?" "What!?" Makoto, hoping for a confession from him to Yuki facepants instead. He is still seeing Yuki's face and Sasha's face as beng very similar. They then find the wreck of an Earth destroyer a field of ice. The conversation will wait until later.
Unnoticed the Gamilas assault ship drops off a pair of tanks near the wrecked Earth ship and continues on toward Yamato.
In the wreckage, the name of the ship is covered in ice, so they can't identify it presently. It is of the Isokaze-class, just like the Yukikaze was. On board they find a few dead bodies in their space suits. No bodies on the bridge that I could see. The only fuctional system is the radio sending the distress call. They decide to look for the ship's log. Around here the Gamilas tanks blow up the Cosmo Seagull and shoot at the destroyer. The blast traps Makoto and AU09 in a compartment away from Yuki and Kodai. Kodai is ordered to help Makoto while Yuki uses the ship's radio to contact Yamato for aid. But Yamato is under attack.
The other three tanks and one APC, as well as the assualt ship are attacking Yamato and the mining crew. The tanks don't have nearly enough firepower to damage Yamato much, but with the engines out of commission the ship can't fight back. They decide to launch Cosmo Falcons. They find out their new system can't be used that close to the ground. So Kato and Shinohara decide to "borrow" the Cosmo Zeros. However someone else had that idea first and takes off unauthorized as Kato arrives. This pilot takes out several tanks before Kato gets out with the other Cosmo Zero. He want to know who's the pilot, but the pilot remains silent. The Assualt ship attacks before Kato can press the issue. He orders whoever it is to aid Mori and Kodai.
Back at the downed destroyer. A female voice tells Yuki that help is on the way. But just then a group of Gamilas invade the ship and knock Yuki out. AU09 manages to burn through the locked hatch that was trapping him and Makoto with his finger laser. Kodai is with them and defends them against the invaders, but they manage to shoot the pistol out of his hand before he gets through the open hatchway. Once in there he notices a older style pistol partly in ice in the cabin. He leaps out under fire to get it, then uses it expertly to take out a few invaders. Makoto goes to render aid to the enemy only to discover they are androids rather than biologicals.
Outside, Kodai manages to take out all but the one android holding Yuki. A geyser goes off and drops the android's tank off a cliff leaving it seemingly alone. At this point Yuki wakes up and knees the android into releasing her. Kodai then shoots it. Yuki is about to chastise him when he leaps at her knocking her out of the way of the other tank's fire at it now starts to accelerate towards them. It is at this time that the Cosmo Zero arrives and takes care of the final tank. Yuki is a little impressed by Kodai at this point. Kodai is thankful to the Cosmo Zero pilot, but also the gun he found, as that is what mostly saved them. He looks at it finally....it has is brother's name on the hanggrip. Shocked Kodai runs over to the destoyer and starts shooting away the ice covering the ship's name....she is the Yukikaze.
Back at Yamato, Kato is dealing with the Assauslt ship using flares to evade missiels and then a few Cannon shots finish the ship off. Yamato is saved and the mining operation can be completed so the ship can be fixed. Kato and the other Cosmo Zero arrive back at the ship..Kato demands to know who the pilot is. She removes her helmet, "I should have know" he says. Akira Yamamoto.
Yamato eventually arrives over the Yukikaze to pick up Kodai, Yuki, Makoto, and AU09. Kodai reports to Okita about the Yukizake...no survivors found. A grave marker is place for the 24 crew lost on her as Yamato leaves Saturn.
Spoiler for Episode 5:
Geru and Schultz review a record from the recon group. They picked up Yuki's distess call and got some footage of the Earth ship. Now they have a name for it, "Yamato". Geru is unimpressed with this ugly ship. Schultz is more interested in how to defeat it. He and his men also miss being under Dommel's command. However it is time to launch today's Planet Bomb at Earth. With the reflector satelites angled, the Reflex Gun is fired from Pluto to a Kepler Belt object. This ignites the object, turning it into a Planet Bomb heading for Earth at 19 space knots. Schultz begins to wonder if they can use this against Yamato....
On Yamato they detect the movement of a Kepler object. It is now a Planet Bomb. Okita decides they must destroy the base on Pluto. They can't allow it to continue raining Planet Bombs on Earth. It will delay them from heading to Iscandar, but Shima promises to make up the time.
Niimi and Sanada are going over the wrecked Gamilas android and are quire fasinated by it. Niimi translates sometimes when Sanada isn't clear enough for Kodai. Niimi likes how direct Sanada is.
Yamamoto confonts Kato again about a transfere to the fighter squadron. Kato does not like the idea, but does not have the authority to make that call one way or another. He does express himself by hitting a locker really hard. Hard enough he needs to go to the medical wing and gets treated by Makoto again who shows some signs of interest in him.
At the staff briefing, Okita spells out what Earth knows about Pluto since the Gamilas have arrived there. There are many hot spots that could be the enemy base, but there are so many they can't be sure which one it is. Also it is clear they are terraforming it somewhat as there is a icy ocean near the equator. Nanba wants to use use the Wave Motion Gun and be done with it. Kodai insists they cannot do that. It would risk destroying the entire dwarf planet. Nanbu replays is on the order of, "what does it matter if we destroy a minor planet or two to get the job done?" Kodai insists on using the fighter squadrons to locate and destroy the enemy base while Yamato runs distraction. They will launch from outside Nix orbit, swing around Charon and come in low and under radio silence with ECM deployed. Nanbu doesn't understand why they even bother having fighters since the cannons and Wave Motion Gun can do the job. This starts to set Kato off but Okita ends it by agreeing wth Kodai's plan and the Captain's word is final. They will operate out of the new CIC for this operation and lend fire support for the fighters when needed. Kodai is assigned to lead the fighters, which surprises Kodai.
Nanbu is still complaining to Yuki about stuff when they spot Kodai talking to Yamamoto in the hallway. She has a request of him as he thank her for the help over Saturn. Not sure what Yuki is thinking here as she can't hear their conversation.
In the Fighter squadrons' briefing room, Kato has something he wants to talk to Kodai about. Kodai says that will be fine after the briefing. But first he has a transfere to make official. With permission from the Captain, "Rei Yamamoto" is reassigned to the fighter squadrons as the only female combat pilot. Yamamoto corrects him. Her name is read "Akira", but she goes by Rei since that is what a lot of people call her. The male pilots are quite attentive having a pretty woman with them. Kodai then describes the mission to Pluto and assigns everyone into two fighter elements. Alpha groups will take the northern hemisphere while Bravo groups takes the southern hemisphere. Kato will be in charge of Bravo. Kodai will take Alpha. He assigns Yamamoto as his wingman in the other Cosmo Zero. As the meeting end Kodai asks what Kato wanted to talk about. Kato says it has been taken care of already.
The Cosmo Falcons and Zeros take off and head for Nix. Yamato heads for Pluto where the Gamilas spot them. As they get close to Charon, things are too quiet. The Wave Motion Shielding is raised, but that will only last 20 minutes. Suddenly the ship is hit by a huge energy beam that penetrates the shields. The explosion is large enough for Kodai to see it, but doesn't know what it is. Yamato begins evaside manuvers. In an effort to find a blind spot from whatever it was that was shooting at them. Sanada scans the area but there is a lot of debris.
Gantz congradulates Schultz in turning the Reflex Gun (designed to move and ignire Kepler objects into Planet Bombs) into a weapon to hit Yamato. The guns' commander comments that is what Dommel trained them to do, think on their feet. But it is worrisome that they didn't destroy Yamato in one shot. Schultz says they will just need to shoot it again and does so. This blast knocks several of Yamato's systems offline and they can't maintain orbit. Okita order a landing in the sea. Once landed Sanada says the Wave Motion Shielding's time is almost up, but has a suggestion.
Schultz bids Yamato farewell has he fires the Reflex Gun one more time. The blast hits the top of the ship near the aft turret and results in a huge explosion. The ship rolls over, then raises up on her stern in a haunting fashion and slowly sinks stern first into the icy sea.
Spoiler for Episode 6:
The episode starts were the last one left off, with Yamato sinking on Pluto. Schultz believes he's finished off this troublesome ship, but doesn't want to report to Geru as that opportunist would just take credit for it, and Schultz hopes that his victory might help elevate himself and his people from second-class citizens to first-class citizens. So he calls Lord Dessler in person. Vice Leader Hiss does not like that Schultz went around the chain of command but Dessler will listen. Schultz reports the sinking of Terron's first translight capable starship on Pluto. Even names it as "Yamato". Dessler is not all that impressed but will remember Schultz loyalty which makes Schultz happy.
Aferwards Dessler demands to know if anyone has heard about the Terrons having a faster than light ship before...no one has. That Hiss hasn't invites a comment from Dessler about that being usual which causes the female bodygaurds to laugh at Hiss' expense. Interesting. Dessler looks on towards a slightly familiar looking blue planet out his office window. This plaent is not named or labeled, but it should be obvious what it is.
Meanwhile on Yamato, thing are not going all that well. They have a few giant holes in the hull, some fires, several systems out, and many wounded. But the Gamilas are leaving them alone, so the fake explosion and sinking act worked. Now it is up to the fighter squadrons to find that base.
Shinohara is talking to his wingman about how pretty Yamamoto is...his wingman, Nemoto (Lance in Star Blazers), can't hear him as Shinohara's fighter's female voiced AI tells him as radio silence is still in effect. Shinohara knows that, but tells the computer to lighten up...a command the computer does not understand. He sounds like he's hitting on the computer a bit.
Kato is chanting in his cockpit (we are told he's from a family of monks or priests), which the AI also does not understand, but they are closing in one of their designated targets. Kato breaks radio silence to tell his wingman to get ready. His wingman, Wahiko Sugiyama (Kato in Star Blazers), response in an affirmative and is then immediately shot down by the Gamilas automated AA guns. Kato reports finding the enemy base to Yamato.
Schultz is informed that Earth fighters have been spotted over one of their Enviromental Control stations and the AA batteries are engaging them. He figures they are some remaining forces from Yamato that left before they spotted the ship enter Pluto space (which is mostly correct). He orders out interceptors. Several fighters take off from an airstrip at the main Gamilas base.
Yamamoto is humming to herself and looking at Pluto's aurora but then notices some bright flairs in the aurora. Kodai is given orders to go assist Kato with the rest of the fighter squadrons. He is stopped by Yamamoto telling him to look at what she is seeing. He looks in time to see several Gamilas fighters exist out of some sort of cloaking field. These head off towards Kato's position. He and Yamamoto use a crevasse to pass through the instrament distorting field to find the enemy base. Schultz is informed of this and wonders how they found them. Kodai and Yamamoto use their missiles to take out the tower generating the cloaking field, and then report to Yamato that they found the base.
On Yamato they need to confirm which contact is the base...Kato's or Kodai's. Sanada and Niimi have a plan to find out. The ship surfaces bottom up. Schultz is incensed by Yamato having survived. He had already reported success to Dessler and now Yamato lives. He has the Reflex Gun powered up again. When the satelites open up this time Niimi spots them from the debris from earlier. Okita uses a periscope-like targeting scope to target one of the satelite and has the underside missiles fired to destroy it just before the beam reaches it. Yamamoto reports the exact location for the Reflex Gun to Yamato.
Kato, finding out his base was the false one is ordered to assist Kodai, but that is difficult with all the Gamilas fighter around him, but Shinohara and the rest of the Cosmo Falcons arrive to give a good dogfight out of it.
Yamato rights itself and arms time delay Type 3 fusion shells in the main guns and let fly at the Reflex Gun. The Gun gets off one more shot as the shells impact the area, exploding like a giant thermonuclear explosion. Yamato then takes off to deal with the base directly. the Reflex Gun's final shot hits right where Yamato was a second earlier.
Ganz suggest evacuation as only alive can Schultz regain his honor.
Yamato shells the Pluto base with fussion shells and missiles as the Gamilas fleet attempts to abandon the base. Most of the fleet is caught inside as an Interplanetary Missile is detonated inside the hanger, finishing off the base. Only Schulz's battleship, the Reflex Gun Commander's heavy cruiser and two destroyers escape the base's destruction. Yamato follows them using Shock Cannons quickly destroying the two destoyers. The Reflex Gun Commander turns back to keep Yamato away from Schultz. Yamato finishes off his heavy crusier quite quickly, but it give Schultz time to warp away.
Back if Gamilas, Hiss reports to Dessler about the loss of Pluto Base and that Schultz retreated. That is not a word Gamilas knows. It is either Victory or Death.
With the Pluto Base gone, Earth is at least saved from future Planet Bombing. Now Yamato can continue its mission to Iscandar. (though they probably need to do some repairs first). They have lost at least one Cosmo Falcon, one Cosmo Seagull and one fighter pilot (Sugiyama) since leaving Earth. It is possible they have lost a few more people, but those are the ones I can confirm as lost.
It was an interesting 100 minutes or so. While it was basically the same story as before, the details were better even though they condensed the story down from 5 episodes to only 4. Even then the removed plot elements are not all that missed.
Spoiler for Removed plot for episode 3:
This story use to be two episodes, number 4 and 5. The plot with the second Gamilas carrier and the fight with the Black Tigers against the flying wing type bombers was removed, as was the plot of Yamamoto struggling to get his damaged fighter back to Yamato. This was Yamamoto's only scene in this season.
The other part cut was a dogfight over the floating continent between a Gamilas flying wing and Kodai in his Cosmo Zero. That and Yamato struggling to escape Jupiter following the use of the Wave Motion Gun. Everything else cut was extended cuts of the same material presented in 2199 episode 3 or narration.
Spoiler for Remove from Episode 4:
Not much cut here. Some alteration. Analyser doesn't show signs of gropping or feeling towards Yuki and the missions are changed a bit. In the original, Sanada's group was collecting biological materials for the food processor and Kodai was going after the Cosmonite deposit. Yamato was never directly attacked, just too far way to aid Kodai. That and the Gamilas were living being in the Yamato version...interestingly in Star Blazers they were "robot tanks" and a few officers to command them.
Spoiler for Removed from episode 5:
In the original the fighters escorted Yamato to Pluto. The Gamilas launched the fleet and several Giant Missiles to get Yamato to come to Pluto so they could used the Reflex Gun to finish off the Earth ship. The Black Tigers took out several destroyers before Yamato fired her shock cannons and destroyed several more. The Gamilas fleet then fled back to Pluto as ordered. The Giant Missiles were taken out by Yamato's port side torpedoes (anti-missile missiles) which exploded to leave lines of destructive energy or something that exploded the Giant Missile that crossed them (similar to the Resurrection film's barrier missiles in some respects). The last few weer taken out by the pulse guns. yamato suffered minor damage.
When Yamato is hit the first time from the Reflex Gun, they lose control of the forward breaking thrusters and are forced to use the rocket anchor to slow down by wiping around Charon. The second blast knocks them out of Charon's orbit (and stresses out the anchor chain) and they crash into the sea on Pluto.
Spoiler for Removed from Episosde 6:
The sequence to take out the Reflex Gun was an infiltration team (The Guns of Navarone style) that had to make it past several traps to get to the Gun. Sugiyama and Nemoto died in this raid. Yamato did some raising and sinking again to attract Reflex Gun fire so the team could find the Reflex Gun was also used. Also something was broken on Yamato so they could not stay under water forever and eventually had to come up.
The Gamilas Fleet retreats from the flooded base after the explosion of the Reflex Gun sends a massive tidal wave into the base. Yamato does not engage them here.
There are a lot of detail things in these episodes to talk about, but that can wait a little bit.
Also all the videos on Youtube seem to be getting removed.

Reason: Spelling
I received the theater-exclusive BD while I was away at Comic-Con, but because of my knee injury (and my Mac crapping out on me), I've not been able to post more. But, I can say that I throughly enjoyed the new episodes. More later...
I doubt we'll see Harlock, as the character belongs to Leiji Matsumoto, and the film and television rights belong to Toei Animation (who are working on a full-CGI animated film on the character). Matsumoto is not involved in the production of 2199.
There is always the chance they might use the plot line without using the character of Harlock. Because one can get away with using the plot without using the name, the eyepatch and the scar. Everything else would seem to work just fine, and at that time (1974) I doubt anyone would have had any special attachment to a Space Pirate Captain Harlock. But a "mysterious pirate ship that aids Yamato from time to time"? That is entirely possible. And keeping it being Mamoru is also possible.
Now them actually pulling it off? Unknown. They will have several episodes to play with at the rate they are going.
Of course, anything is possible. But, as far as Harlock, specifically, is concerned, no. That's what Joemenix asked, and what I precisely responded to. Not any hypotheticals.
Only if Toei pays Matsumoto for the use of his character.
If they use an unnamed pirate, it will be ok.
I don't care if Mamoru will not be named as Harlock, I just hope that the character of pirate Mamoru will appear.
Toei isn't producing 2199. It's not even one of the partners involved in the "Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Production Committee". There's still bad blood between Matsumoto and Nishizaki (now in the guise of Nishizaki's son, Shoji). The set up is there for Mamoru to reappear, but perhaps we should wait and see; and for the time being, discuss what we do know, based on what has transpired, so far.
I thoroughly enjoyed these eps. Its a pain waiting on each bluray, but as long as they keep the quality of each ep up like this, its more than acceptable.
The technical detail quality never drops from each ep. Even all points on the Yamato hit by the reflex cannon still shows in all parts of the animation. Including the damage to the rear secondary turrent which is still evident as the Yamato is making its fly by at the end of ep 6.
The launch bay set up is pretty efficient at least in regards to the launch sequence but I would like to see the recovery operation of the fighters. Its also interesting to see how the battle bridge is smaller than the main bridge even though its located in the secondary supposedly larger section of the bridge tower.

Oh, you write that informative blog, didn't expect to see you post on AnimeSuki. What are the theater exclusive extras again? The 2nd disc almost convinced me to import this show for real.

That's the beauty of 3D models, you can maintain a consistent look even where damage is concerned.
The landing operation for the fighters is something that is bothering me too, the launche processes seem to be very efficient but the landing is probably tricky. The Zeros can probably use VTOL capabilities to land on the upper platforms but the Falcons... i'm sure they'll show us how it's done but it must be a lot more complex than the launch.
I've just watched episode 3 and 4. Still awesome as always.
Really love when they shoot wave motion gun.
A land with size nearly equal as Australia is destroyed. It's just WOW.
Well, most of episode 3 I've seen from the various youtube clips posted here (who knew I was watching most of it before the episode even showed up) . All that was needed was subs and some exposition. Wave Motion Gun firing in 720p though was glorious
Although the one thing that did catch me by surprise this episode...
If I do have one nitpick so far, it's that for a series that's trying to get its technical details as "real" as possible, they have a whacky sense of scale. At 23,000 km, the floating continent shouldn't be as large as it looks like relative to the Yamato. And details like seeing a sizable Yamato in orbit from the surface of Mars or the planet busting warhead in episode 2 irks me. Not enough to ruin my overall tremendous enjoyment of the series, but it could have been better.
Edit:
Episode 4
"Are you related to aliens?"
Makoto's reaction to Susumu's question is gold
Also, tankbusters ftw

Combat ranges could be considered unrealistically close for the weapons they are using, but that is pretty much normal in sci-fi since laser beams into the distance or laser beams from nowhere is rather boring.
The fight on the Continent was probably at less than 10 kilometers distance if I'm reading Kodai's binoculars correctly. While that seems reasonable due to the hills and things that might be in the way, in space that seems way too close for comfort at what should be relative speeds.
Oh and it is Susumu, not Mamoru.
Mamoru is the older brother that went down with the Yukikaze.
Susumu is the younger brother than might go down with Yuki.

Woops, got the two confused again
And while I myself would have tagged it to 23 km instead of 23,000 km, the fact is that with a continent supposedly the size of Australia, the perspective becomes all out of whack when you consider how large Australia is supposed to be compared to the continent. Then you'd have either the continent be smaller with Yamato being closer, which contradicts the dialogue.
