I thought the first episode was quite decent. It wasn't awe-inspiring or anything, but still, it was great to see the Little Busters guys do their thing. I thought Masato sounded a little strange when he was talking normally, but his OMG/arguing voice was great as always.

It's not an anime-only viewers thread. But, you don't need to try to "upgrade" anime-only viewer's knowledge either. We should only talk about things shown *in* the episode, and leave the rest to be revealed in due time. Even if that means some people will be slightly confused for now. That's the sort of balance I'm trying to get at.

I noticed this too :/ I'm hoping it's just on my end, because it was the most off-putting thing about the OP for me. Otherwise I thought it was amazing..

Speaking as a VN player here, I don't think this could have been done any better. They did a very fine job at adapting here. Sure it's not remarkable visuals, but they're definitely not bad and are a cut above average (Though a bit of abuse on stills at the beginning).
And yes, as RRR pointed out Kyousuke is definitely a high selling point for this work, at least for me. Popularity that actually makes sense, not just because we're told they're popular or it's justified with things like "great grades and looks." He actually does have a personality type that naturally draws together crowds. Funny enough, I was the only one really complaining about Riki's VA before the anime aired and for some reason it doesn't bother me in the premiere and everyone else is now complaining . Strange! Anyways good episode and the world didn't end because JC is adapting it . Quote:

After watching this first episode, I have no sense of what the anime is after. There are snippets that they used to go around helping people. Then there is this desire to start a baseball team for random reasons. Then there are random comedy and super battles and random funny oujou sama villain popping up beating up good girl. Right now, everything is just thrown together in a jumble with no direction or any indication of what they want to do with this series. In essence, it looks like a mess. No, it does not need to answer everything, but a first episode should at least set a premise for the show. Edit: Furthermore, as far as I can tell, this is not some mystery where they need the viewers to start to speculate and figure things out. It seems like it is supposed to be straightforward, so withholding information makes it that much more confusing.

I think the one thing that kept throwing me off was Riki's VA. I mean I like the voice normally, but somehow I don't think its a good fit here. Maybe it is for the contrast with the other guys, but geeze it's tough hearing Hanyuu talking through a guy .
A bit of a strange first episode, but got some good laughs out of it too. I have to say it does make sense that Kyousuke can draw people to him, since he does have a magnetic personality. Besides kind of nice to have multiple solid guys in a group. Obviously from the OP the girls will start moving in, but that's actually fine since it will balance things out.

For longer stories (and we know this is at least two-cour), I usually give it a few episodes to reveal its theme. But even that aside, I have no doubt that a theme will become apparent over time. I'm okay with waiting for it, but I can understand that not everyone will feel the same way.

Well, the first episode does have a certain haphazardness to it, but for me that's much of what made the comedy so effective.
Anime sometimes has a tendency to kind of overly reinforce its comedy moments by reeeallly dragging them out, and/or basically having characters explain the joke (which, as The Joker himself knows, ruins the joke! ). Here the comedy is effective precisely because its fast, snappy, quick, and not totally predictable. With this in mind, one thing I like is how Rin doesn't have some "female character shield" around her. She can get comically victimized too. And she seems like a bit of a goofball herself, really (i.e. it's not just the guys acting like goofballs). A tsundere goofball, equal parts KugRie and Yui Hirasawa, now that's something. And anyway, I never found this episode that confusing. This popular guy who's genuinely a great guy to his friends comes home after a vain attempt to get a job, and they're naturally excited that their good buddy is back. Then you get a bunch of friends horsing around like friends of this age tend to do, and I just think that it all flows pretty well. Now, I'm not sure if anything introduced in this episode is supposed to mean more than what I'm getting here, but even if so the anime has time to make that clear. For now, I'm satisfied just taking it as a bunch of guys (and one girl who is the sister of one of those guys) having a blast together. And guys, there's much weirder things than a bunch of guys deciding to start up a baseball team and/or game. This sort of random activity choice is actually pretty common in real life, in my experience.

Anyway, I'm voting 8/10. Some of the animation (Kengo cutting at Masato's shirt in the opening fight for example) felt really jarring. Good, but not perfect. I do like that they're (so far) being faithful to the original source instead of trying to tell a new story (like Da Capo II's anime adaptation *shudder*). Looking forward to how this shapes up in the future though. Last edited by Daniel E.; 2012-10-07 at 03:15. |

I have complaints (*gasp*), but I think there's no need to reiterate what others have already said.
On the bright side, it's great seeing these characters again. Quote:
This isn't directed at you, but people often apply their preference as some golden rule on "objectively" judging an anime, and eventually forget that it's just a preference. I've learned to accept that people want different things than what I want from anime.

Spoiler for Spoiler from TV Tropes' description of the adaptation:
Not familiar with the source material, but given the atmosphere of the first episode and (contents of spoiler), if they manage to pull of the transition credibly it will be very good. (And thinking Clannad, they will probably manage it...) |

XD Kyousuke is as random as Haruhi.
Haruhi: Let's play baseball Kyousuke: Let's play baseball Akio: Let's play baseball I guess baseball is a national sport in Japan as basketball is to the Philippines. Anyway it seems Kyousuke is as genre savvy.... Too bad the fight was not animated.... I would have liked to see it (this coming from someone who didn't play the visual novel...) First episode moral lesson: Eel pie has 0 defense against a 3 section staff.

On a different note, I just finished watching Suki-tte Ii na yo, and the animation quality between that show and this is night and day. If this show had the same animation quality, it would definitely add more appeal to the show. And this show is supposed to be higher profile, too. It makes me wonder what is going on.

At the end of the day, the show won't win a prize for the most visually-striking anime of the season. But if it can maintain this level throughout the whole run and the story is well-presented, I'll probably still enjoy it.

What happened to front loading first episodes with budget?
Ah well...Faithful adapt, but considering just how faithful it was and the quality of the "animation" (Mmm stills~) I mostly came away from the first episode feeling like I really should just go replay the game again. Guess I'll keep an eye out on the synopses see if continues down the road of mediocrity or not...

I think this episode takes the phrase 'faithful adaptation' to an undesirable extreme. Not a bad episode by any means, but I like my scriptwriters to have a twiny bit of creativity.
So I have to deduct 3 points for this. That said, it gets 5t903486093485990490 points for the OP and ED. Masterful. So this episode gets 5t903486093485990487/10 from me.
